    Itching nothing??

    Hello all-

I have two goldens- over the weekend they were both outside playng, rolling around in our yard etc.. it was super hot out (90's) so I even got out the baby pool for them to play in. Since Monday night, Comet mostly ,has been scratching himself silly. They are due for their monthy Frontline application (in a week) so I gave it to both of them early just in case (since they both got bathes a week back). Still scratching.. I keep examining his skin- not red, not flees, not flakey.. nothing.. but still scratching! They were out at nightime with mostiquoto's.. could they have gotten bit?? I'm at a loose here..   [:o]

I'd put my money on it being allergies.  My lab's been having a tough time too and mostly on her feet which I associate with walking on the grass.  You might try using some benadryl (1-2mg per lb of each dogs weight) and see if that calms things down.  Was there anything unusual that they rolled around in?  What type of shampoo did you use.  I find that Nu Sal T helps relieve the itching much better than anything else I've used.

I have 3 goldens and sometimes they will scratch and i can find nothing for them to be scratching about--and it is this time of year.  I know one is allergic to bermuda grass.  And we think live oak tree pollen.  She does tend to get hot spots during the "greening season" and after we have had a lot of rain.  This year between Jan. 1 and day before yesterday, we had only had 3/4 inch of rain here in our area.  This is a farming community and field that are normally knee high in cotton or maize, or head high in corn are just plowed up fields with NOTHING growing.  AND the dogs have only had itches this year because of fleas.  My vet said he has never seen fleas as bad as they are this year.  And the Frontline does not last the full month either.  I put it on them on May 10 and over this past weekend, I found a flea circus on Honey's tummy and also on Buck.  Honey is very blonde and is easy to see the fleas on her, but Buck is a red golden and not so easy to see them on him.  Since it had only been 2 1/2 weeks since I put the Front Line Plus on them, i was scared to use it again, so i dusted them with 5% Sevin Dust --it lists using it on dogs and cats as one of the uses and I have done it for ages before Frontline came out.  I haven't seen any fleas on them since I put the Sevin Dust on them Saturday morning.

I hvae used Frontline for the past several years, but it is not working like it use to.  Several people have mention this on some of the forums I am on, all breed and golden retriever.

    A few thots:

    1.  Allergies -- could well be, particularly if there was a lot of pollen.

    2.  How about fertilizer/pesticide??  If your lawn is 'treated' there are some lawn treatments that are like liquid itch on dogs.  My vet had switched lawn companies recently and one of the last times we were up there my dogs were fine ... walked INTO the place via taking a tinkle on the lawn and ITCH CITY!!!  The vet specifically quizzed me "Did they start to scratch AFTER getting on the grass??" and next thing I know he had to replace sod and was using a whole new lawn fertilizer because the other company was using something so horrible on dog skin.

    3.  Contact allergy -- SOME types of greenery -- St. Augustine sod, night-blooming jasmine, wandeirng jew and some others, are like poison ivy to some dogs -- BUT you should see little tiny blisters (like a wet rash) on the belly/bare skin ... and you'll often see the edge of the mouth (the 'lips') red and sore from licking.

    4.  Sarcops -- if this was anywhere near a place where squirrels, coon, possum, woodchuck, or any warm-blooded wildlife might be -- the dogs CAN pick up wildlife sarcops and get bitten.  And one dog may react more than another.  You won't 'see' them -- you often won't even see a rash -- depends on the dog and the skin.  But if the itch is FIERCE and just doesn't abate -- I'd talk to your vet about either Interceptor (Revolution is SUPPOSED to do it but often does not), or if this is a non-herding dog  (I think you said goldens, but I'm not positive) maybe ivermectin or even just plain old Lyme Dip (which you should be able to take home and do).

    Just food for thot.

what food do you feed your dog?
    • Silver
I feed California Natural - herring & potato.. and have been for a while. What's weird is that the itching really has subsided..so I don't know what caused the itching..maybe pollen in the air or something.. no rash etc so I guess I will chalk it up to those darn allergies!
