A few thots:
1. Allergies -- could well be, particularly if there was a lot of pollen.
2. How about fertilizer/pesticide?? If your lawn is 'treated' there are some lawn treatments that are like liquid itch on dogs. My vet had switched lawn companies recently and one of the last times we were up there my dogs were fine ... walked INTO the place via taking a tinkle on the lawn and ITCH CITY!!! The vet specifically quizzed me "Did they start to scratch AFTER getting on the grass??" and next thing I know he had to replace sod and was using a whole new lawn fertilizer because the other company was using something so horrible on dog skin.
3. Contact allergy -- SOME types of greenery -- St. Augustine sod, night-blooming jasmine, wandeirng jew and some others, are like poison ivy to some dogs -- BUT you should see little tiny blisters (like a wet rash) on the belly/bare skin ... and you'll often see the edge of the mouth (the 'lips') red and sore from licking.
4. Sarcops -- if this was anywhere near a place where squirrels, coon, possum, woodchuck, or any warm-blooded wildlife might be -- the dogs CAN pick up wildlife sarcops and get bitten. And one dog may react more than another. You won't 'see' them -- you often won't even see a rash -- depends on the dog and the skin. But if the itch is FIERCE and just doesn't abate -- I'd talk to your vet about either Interceptor (Revolution is SUPPOSED to do it but often does not), or if this is a non-herding dog (I think you said goldens, but I'm not positive) maybe ivermectin or even just plain old Lyme Dip (which you should be able to take home and do).
Just food for thot.
