snotty nose

    snotty nose

It's always something with Gracie. Last weekend we had to take her to the vet b/c she started peeing blood. Vet said it was a bladder infection, gave her antibiotics (amoxicillan). She's doing fine with that now. The thing now is that she has got a horrible snotty  nose. Any chance this could be a reaction to the antibiotics? Sounds strange to me but it started 3 days after she started them. Everything I've read on here makes me think if it was allergies, she'd have other symptoms like itching or red eyes. All she's got is a snotty nose. I've got to take her back to the vet in a few days anyway so they can make sure the bladder infection is cleared up. I'm wondering would it be safe to give her something like Benedryl even though she's on the antibiotics? Any words of wisdom? Thanks!

Poor little girl! You could give her benedryl to help her breathe better, however, when the vet opens in the morning, I would take her back. It seems like she has developed an upper respitory infection which is not normal for dogs to do. Keep an eye out for her.

if you use anynose drops, the safest ones are pediatric saline drops, anything else might very slightly , but possibly, a problem

Amoxyl isn't going to be wonderfully effective for an upper respiratory infection -- I doubt it's a reaction to the amoxyl - it's probably just something else.  When you get marked discharge like that it's usually best to have a vet check it.

Well here's an update on my high maintenance baby. My husband took her to the vet this AM. He was planning on taking her anyway but last night her nose started bleeding so it was obvious something had to be done. So they first thought she might have something stuck in her nose b/c the snot and blood was just on one side. They did xrays and looked up her nose with something. They didn't find anything so now they're doing a skin scratch test to see if it might be something fungal. Hopefully that made sense - I've never done this before so I'm a little clueless. Just wanted to give ya'll an update though b/c you've been very helpful with all my Gracie issues.

Tanner, how is Gracie doing today? Has the vet given you some clear answers??

OK here's the diagnosis - vet says she has sinusitus (??...sinus infection) and put her on some meds for that. They also did a skin scrape and found that she had some kind of mite that gets down in the hair folicles and makes the hair fall out. If you look at my posting for "pink & puffy cheek", that's what that was all about. Of course we'd already taken her to the vet once on that and they said it just looked like she had been rubbing it on something - go figure. So pretty much now I could open a dog pharmacy with all the medicine I have. I'm just glad to have my baby home and hopefully on her way to being healthy. SURELY we're done at the vet for a while!

P.S. - forpaws, Tanner is my other dog...not me :)
