    What is this?????

This spot showed up on Gracie a few weeks ago and it was just a little spot.. and it's getting worse. At first I thought maybe it was a problem with her food, but then I realized that she has been eating the same type of food for a while now and this is the only spot, other than a small one on her back leg.

My mom thinks maybe she is doing that to herself when she is in her crate when I'm at work and I'm starting to wonder if she's right?? I know the pics aren't the greatest, but she's a wiggle worm.

I've started rubbing it each night before bed with tea tree oil and olive oil. I don't know what to do to get her to leave it alone so it will heal.

Edited to add: it doesn't seem to bother her, it doesn't seem like it's itchy or bothers her. She doesn't like it too much when I mess with it, but that's because she doesn't like to sit still.

    It might be a ringworm.

My Bubblegum is white in most places,,and she tends to bite herself in certain spots,, that almost looks like the same kind of thing. But we kind of try to stop her when we hear that she is doing it,,,so it doesn't get as bad.  Just a thought,,,,

    Trishanne,

I asked my vet last week about a round spot on my dog's leg, also.  Only, his doesn't have that sore, irritable area in the center.   His is just lost hair.   The hair around the area pulls out easily.   She said it might be ringworm, as luv4gsds said.  Or it could be more or less, just a sore.

She suggested putting neosporin with pain relief on there (which, honesly, I haven't done since it hasn't gotten worse).  She said the pain relief has a numbing agent that will make dog's tonques numb and they won't like it and should leave it alone.

I *think* more round spots will show up if it is ringworm, but maybe not?   Ringworm is a fungal infection and can be transmitted to humans, if that's what it is.

I think the center area really looks nasty, as far as irritations go.  The picture seems to indicate red bumpy areas. Not having experience with this, I can't say what it might be, but that concerns me more than just the hair loss in one area.

If it were me, I would have it looked at.  If it's ringworm, then you need meds.  If not, then I would like to know why there are multiiply red bumps in the area.  Since you say it doesn't seem to bother her, then that makes me think it is not her biting the wound during the day.  I think if it "itched or hurt", then you would see her biting at night.  Since it doesn't appear to bother her, then I think there is less chance she is "bothered' by it during the day.  While she could be "picking" on it out of boredom during the day, I honestly don't think that is likely.   I would have it checked out.

Is it an open sore in the center?

Dyan, no there is no open sore at all.. the only thing is it's bald and there is little bumps.. where the hair is suppose to be. There's no redness.. just skin color, or dirt if she goes outside playing.. The pictures do seem to make it look worse than it is.

I do realize that tea tree oil is toxic to cats.. and trust me.. none of my cats go near her, every time they do she puts their whole head in her mouth! LOL! I put it on her just before we go to sleep and she doesn't lick it  but I do watch her. Nosey Boss doesn't even want to check it out because he doesn't like the smell of it.

Can you rub a little antibiotic salve on it?  Maybe that could help!

Yeah, I thought about that too. I am also seriously considering trying something.

I have one of my eye specialist appointments tomorrow and since they dilate my eyes, then stick a camera on my eyeball and take about 50 pictures I usually can't see straight for the rest of the day so I end up taking the whole day off from work. I was thinking of spending the time I am home completely "puppy proofing" the house and maybe giving it a try leaving her out of her crate. I really am skeptical about it, but I can't have her sitting in her crate eating her fur off either. I can gate off the upstairs so that limits the rooms she'd be allowed to be in anyway and maybe she'd be okay.

Maybe I can start coming home for lunch again and checking on things mid day.. making sure she gets outside to potty. Hopefully too with Boss to occupy her and nothing they can get into she won't chew things she's not suppose to. I just have to remember to make sure there are no bones out. There have been no major altercations over them, but she does get pretty loud about it and I'd rather not have that be an issue when I am not home.

I would try leaving her out of the crate for just a small amount of time at first, to make sure she doesnt' get into trouble. I have read a lot that most dogs chew/destroy things when their owners first leave....I'm sure that is NOT ALWAYS true, but I would only go for a short time at first.
Hopefully you get to the bottom of that sore!
