    UTI....really just a rant

    because it makes me nervous...

She had a UTI...the culture showed Ecoli, and the lab said Primor would be effective on it, so because of her history she took it for 6 weeks.  A new culture was taken, took almost 2 weeks because they did it twice, and the Ecoli was grown again both times.  She apparently is resistant to all the normal Vet meds...Baytril, Clavamox, Primor.

The Vets put their heads together, came up with some options, but of course I am not qualified to make a decision and will leave it up to them.  So they are going to order something called chloramphenicol, which they have never used before, and can cause anemia and mess with the blood cells.

They will do another culture, and send it to another lab, also.  Regular blood work will have to be done.

Another option is a med that has to be injected daily for 4-6 weeks, but they don't want to go that route yet.

I don't want to think about the possibilities....

Those are the lessons we learn best.  I'll never forget that *I* learned that acetaminaphen was poison to dogs ALMOST the hard way.  I had a dog with arthritis, and I had literally JUST bought some Children's Tylenol because at that time baby aspirin was hard to find (it was before it became in vogue as a low-dose heart supplement) and kid's Tylenol was all I could find.  And gee, I figured no big deal.

Literally just that night I had gotten a new book "The Pill Book Guide to Medications for Your Dog and Cat" -- and there was a 25 page section on "poisons" that I was just browsing thru and there it was, big as life 'Acetaminaphen is POISON to your dog' (not a direct quote but my eyes saw 'poison' in caps!).  I was SO close to giving it to Mike it wasn't funny.

It's still a darned good book -- a Dell reference book.  You can get it thru Amazon.com and it's not expensive (like $6.99).  It doesn't have the newer drugs in it (last pub. 1998) but it's one of my best resources.

Glad I caught you before disaster struck.  Sometimes when we leave the vets our heads are just spinning!!
