Lucy is obstructed

    Lucy is obstructed

I don't really want to write about it, but I figure it's best if I do.  Lucy has not been feeling well recently, throwing up since Tuesday a couple of times a day.  Bowels fine, not sure about food since she eats when she wants and we both feed her, and she has been urinating fine.  Anyway, I took her into the vet today because I just had a feeling she wasn't really well, even though I felt like a hypocondriac dog mom and she was acting just fine this afternoon.

But... she is not fine.  She has a foreign body in her intestines.  She will be home under observation until sat when we take her for more X-rays.  If these are fine she will have a clean bill of health.  If they are not...well we are in this for the long haul.

Man this little lady has had more health issues in her short life than ANY human being that I know.  (this is not true but at least for affect :) )

Aww. Poor lil girl. Lucy, don't you know you're not supposed to scare your mama like that?

Do they have any idea what she ate?

No, I think it might have been part of a bone that I got at the store.  I had no idea you weren't supposed to give them, why do they sell them then.  But it really could be anything.  The vet says it doesn't look like a bone in the X-ray, but I can't tell.

Awe,,,,,,,,,,,,,   poor Lucy!  I hope on Sat. they find she is fine.   Keeping fingers and paws crossed for you!

I hope Lucy is ok also. I will keep her in my prayers and all paws are crossed here too. Please let us know what happens.

Obstuctions can pass -- but you also can't let them go.  If she goes to a point where she can't keep ANYTHING down, or if she stops pooping TOTALLY -- then call the vet and don't wait for Saturday.

They sell Twinkies -- and they are neither good for us nor do they contain good stuff.  They sell cigarettes and booze -- both of which cause all kinds of health problems.  They sell all sorts of stuff for dogs that cause problems -- because they are profitable.

It's hard -- and then you wind up with a situation like this and suddenly you realize you have to educate yourself on every darned thing they put in their mouth or play with.

Don't be afraid to call the vet if suddenly it all feels VERY wrong before Saturday -- you don't want to let the dog weaken too much if they have to do surgery.

Has the vet been able to locate it on an x-ray?? If so that's GOOD.  the tough part of obstruction is when they can't locate the 'where' and then have to do an ultrasound or just guess in order to do surgery.  If you've found it on an x-ray you are VERY fortunate.

They can obstruct on anything -- from fibers from a bit of carpet or hammock they chewed on, to a nylon stocking or a rock (and yeah, some dogs actually EAT rocks!!!)

If the dog can't hold down ANY food or water ... that's a big red flag -- that means the intestinal tract has backed up TO the stomach -- at that point the dog can't eat or drink and that's a BIG HUGE deal (and can get the dog dehydated) -- so even if the vet's office says "Saturday" that doesn't mean not to call if you see those warning signals.  Make sense???  Sounds like your vet found it -- GOOD for them!!

Poor Lucy. I sure hope you keep us updated on her condition. Fingers are all crossed that this passes.
Good for you for following your instincts and having her checked out so quickly.

I ditto everything about getting to the vet asap if she can't keep anything down and stops pooping. Get better, Lucy! We're praying for a good outcome here!

Thanks guys for all the support.  She appears to be doing fine.  I found a little liquad on the floor next to her bed where I think she vomitted in the night, but no food and she IS eating.  I watched her have dinner.  She is also deficating, at least she did yesterday evening.  We knew she had to go because we saw it on the x-ray [sm=blush.gif].  And yes, they saw the obstruction.  Not sure what it is, but at least they know where.  The doc was concerned because of the gas that was gathering around it. I don't know what this indicates, but he said he was it wasn't good.  He is also afraid that it may perforate the intestines as the object appears to have "spikes".

This dog man.  She has more issues than anything.  She's already been in the vet hospital 3 times now (including this time).  When we got her spayed she was ALLERGIC to the stitches and had to have emergency surgery on a sunday night at the emergency vet none the less.  then she ate rock salt because she thought it was snow or ice and was poisoned, had to spend three days with our new best friends the vets at Cross Vet Clinic.  Now this.  I know she will be fine, maybe irritated because of another week or two with the e-collar on, but man when will she be healthy and stay healthy.[sm=banghead002.gif]  She's just a puppy!!![sm=uhoh.gif]

I sure hope she is doing better.  But i am a bit surprised if the object appears to have apikes and could puncture her insides, and she is collecting a lot of gas around it, that he did operate right away.

    oh my goodness...
I don't have anything helpful to offer but we will keep her in our thoughts!
I do agree with the others, if she appears to get worse in the ways they described, don't wait til tomorrow. You've got to be a doggie advocate for her, so if you think she needs care immediately make sure she gets it... you're allowed to be a pain lol. I don't know much about obstructions at all so I wish you the best of luck... she's lucky to have you! I feel your pain on the doggie with many issues and becoming close friends with the vet.. I've got one of those myself.

I think the reason that he didn't operate right away is because she is acting just fine.  She continues to do so too.  She is still jumping around and playing the usual tricks... like bolting when you want to go inside.

I don't know.  Tomorrow we will know.

Thanks again for all the support, thoughts and prayers!!!

Good luck tomorrow, I'll be looking for an update.  :)  Lucy stop eating things!!

Boy, I know this feeling well.  Lenny ate a piece of a tennis ball several weeks back that blocked his intestines so he couldn't digest food.  A very scary day for sure.

Kepp us posted on the vet visit tomorrow!
