    Yeast Infection from Antibiotics

My puppy, Gracie, is being treated with antibiotics for a bladder infection. I've read a lot about this in dogs and it sounds like they can get yeast infections from antibiotics just like people. I'm wondering what are the symptoms so I'll know what to look for if that happens to her. Thanks for ya'lls help!

If your dog immune system is weak then there is a chance that it MIGHT get a yeast infection from the antibiotics. There is one yeast called Canduda albicans that lives in our pets and it concumes such things as sugar and fats in order to survive. When our pets immune system is healthy their body is able to destory the yeast. Sometimes the antibiotics make the immune system go out of whack and that will bring on a yeast infection.

It's not that they get an infection FROM the antibiotics, but because they have been ON them.  They kill off the normal bacteria that is normally present.  One thing you can do is to add some plain yogurt to her food to help the readjustment period.

Yes, definitely give some sort of probiotic (and yogurt is great - just make sure it's one without nutrasweet in it).  BUT ;make sure you give it 2-3 hours 'off' from the antibiotic.  In other words, give the antibiotic at supper and then give the yogurt as a bedtime treat.

My Billy would tell you that Rockin Raspberry or Strawberry Vanilla is THE bestest (Stoneyfield).  They love yogurt but I don't know what it is about those little cartons and he comes TEARING after it.  And if I actually *say* "Rockin Raspberry" -- whoo hoo -- they are jumping out of their skin for it!! LOL

LOL, Callie!  My dogs love flavored yogurt also and I didn't see harm in it.  But others always say to use the plain,  so I went with that to be safe!  Java might love you for saying that!

So much joy in a little spoonful.  Fruit IS good for them.  It's a good calcium source too.  My husband gets this enormous laugh out of them eating off a spoon.  It IS pretty hysterical.

In the dietary stuff *I* have learned, fruit combined with a milk protein at bedtime is good for the digestion and makes the gut not feel hungry -- that's in humans at least.  But I know it sets well with all 3 of my dogs. LOL
