Parvo

    Parvo

Max, my lab puppy came down with Parvo over the weekend.  Fortunately, we got him to the hospital and he did great with only a 2-day stay.  He is pretty much back to normal now.  I was just curious about one thing.  He got his 3rd set of shots the week before this happened.  This puppy has not been out of the house at any time except for vet visits.  I know we can bring it in but I thought we were being way overprotective.  We did this because we lost a pup in November to distemper.  What luck right?  The vet did the parvo test and it came up as a weak positive.  He didn't know if it was because of the shots or not.  The hospital said it really didn't matter  -- with his weak positive and the symptoms, they would treat him for parvo regardless.  He had the vomiting (the reason we took him in) and only 2 bouts of diarrhea, no blood. So, I don't know if he had a very mild case due to his shot history or what.    Having gone through distemper and parvo  within 5 months of each other but with different puppies, I hope that is it for us!!!

I'm sorry I don't have any advice or experience, but I wanted to wish you the best. That's a lot to have to deal with in a few months. Hope all's well and stays well!

Have they warned you how incredibly contagious this is??  Like you guys need to be taking off your shoes AT THE DOOR -- and not wearing shoes that have been in your yard "out" to the rest of the world -- because parvo can be tracked on literally 1-2 MOLECULES of poop to spread it all over town.

And just because the pup is feeling better -- that doesn't mean your yard isn't contagious.  Please be careful -- it's so deadly -- bleach is about the only thing that will kill parvo AND distemper.

And you do know you can't bring another pup intoyour yard for two years??  I'm amazed someone didn't caution you about not bringing a pup in after you had distemper there.  Those diseaes both can actually live in the soil for a LONG LONG ***LONG*** time.

Not trying to be an alarmist -- but sometimes vets don't do a very good job of telling you how NOT to spread it.  If you have neighbors who you know let their dogs loose -- you might drop a handout door to door to encourage people to keep their dogs contained because parvo has been in the neighborhood.  Not a fun thing to tell people but it's responsible.

Good luck-- I'm glad you got away with a small case.

Yes, I am aware of how contagious parvo is.  We are being careful and cleaning with bleach, etc.  Regarding distemper, I consulted several vets who all said to wait 2-3 weeks and we would be fine.  I also did  a lot of reading and found that distemper isn't nearly as hearty as the parvo virus as far as lurking on the ground, etc. We waited almost 2 months just to be safe before getting another dog.  We don't have plans on getting anymore dogs, for sure not now after this.  We did tell our neighbors about what was going on.

Good for you -- there was nothing 'accusatory' in my post.  It's just hard to know how much people DO know when they start posting about such stuff.

You guys have been thru the mill -- but I'm so glad you got  thru parvo pretty easily. And I'm sure you think you should qualify for stock in Chlorox by now, huh?  Good luck.

I didn't think you were being accusatory!  Before getting Buddy and then Max, I would never know about distemper and parvo!  After having both, I wonder how any puppy makes it to adulthood!!! Yes, we are definitely going through the Chlorox -- good thing that bleach is relatively cheap!  Thanks for your help!

It is likely that because of the shots it was a milder case...   It's all in perspective.  In my germ theory...a vaccinated dog has no guarantee of NOT getting sick...nor does an unvaccinated dog have a guarantee of GETTING sick.   Did you know that if you locked thousands of people in a building and released Antrax only a handful of ppl would get "sick" from it?  It is all about disease resistance and the immune system's current state.  I am really sorry about your pups and glad to hear the one is getting better.  Parvo is scary as heck and its good you caught it fast ANNNND that you went ahead with treatment even though "in theory" it could have been a false negative!!!  You're a good parent!!!!        Oh and for the record...parvo can live in the soil for I think 7 years!  Treat your house, shoes, and yard with a bleach water mixture!  That includes ALLL TOYS!!!  and be sure to throw away the other ;pups toys!!!!!!!!!!   [:)]          I love to hear about quality pet parents!!    [:D]

It's a sad fact of life that too often vets DON'T relate all the information that Callie and the others have here.  I'm glad that YOUR vet was thorough.
