Well I spoke too soon in my last post about my 2 weeks into TO. The acid stomach issues reared their ugly head this morning. I have a suspicioun that came about after I had already ordered the TO, so I've decided to stop mid-bag and give my experiement a try.
I have a feeling (based on experience & conversations with my vet) that my male Pyr needs a food that will remain with him a little longer. His mature stomach is so extremely acidic that he's processing his food at a very fast rate, plus he's eating a very meat heavy diet so most of whatever he eats is going to be used up and not stick around for any length of time in his gut. He's getting to an empty stomach, building up acid too soon before his next meal and then throwing up.
He was raised on Canidae with some raw off and on and some homecooked. I've always been thrilled with Canidae and never had any issues until he fully matured about 8mo ago and his weight finally leveled off and he started to self-regulate. That is when the acid stomach issues started - very random in the beginning and have progressively gotten more frequent.
So instead of increasing his feeding schedule from 2 meals to 3 (saving that as a last resort), I'm giving Eagle Pack Natural a try. I'm going to see if my suspicion is correct that with a food not quite so dense if it will process a bit slower and possibly stick around a little longer easing the acid stomach issues or at least descreasing the amount of time between bouts of empty stomach. Plus he'll be eating a bit more in volume which I'm hoping will also contribute.
I have no idea if this will work or if I'm way off base, but I figure a month trial should be enough time to tell me. I went from a kcal/cup that was high to an even higher one, and my gut tells me that he might actually need a lower one from where I started so we'll see.
