    What is this...

I was just on the phone with my mom talking about her dogs and mine, which we do a lot.  She was telling me her doberman has a rash on his stomach.  It is bright red and kind of tough and saggy looking.  He has had demodectic mange the past but that was on his face an chest.  That was cleared up months ago though.  We were just wondering if anyone has experienced this and what is?

It sounds like a Staph infection to me. If  the rash is pimple like and itchy. Put some Benedryl spray on it and an antibiotic cream on top of that. Your mom's dog is going to need an internal antibiotic also to help clear the infection up.
I would have a vet take a look at it and they will prescribe the correct anitbiotic and strength. Good luck

Yes, this sounds just like what we've been battling with Sassy.  Hers turned out to be staph and pseudomonas.  It started in Jan. and I'm still using topicals to try to keep it under control.  Hopefully your situation won't be like mine.  We went thru the list of antibioitics (baytril, cipro, ketaconazale).  I'd suggest having the vet do a culture & sensitivity so you know exactly what you're dealing with.

Do you know how they test for it and all.  She will take him to the vet but is a little tight on cash right now.  She just wants an idea of how much it will be.  No matter what it is she will pay it, but it's good to know before she goes in.  I forgot to mention he is outside in a kennel with a concrete bottom during the day, could that have caused it.  Also it isn't pimplely look, it's smooth but tough looking and covers his whole stomach.

Could be pyoderma, a bacterial infection. My Tzu, Ziggy has horrible allergies and gets bacterial infections. He must then take antibiotics for around 3 weeks. It is very red and itchy. All of the antibiotics must be taken even if the rash is gone.

The first visit when I took Sassy in and they did the culture & sensitivity cost me about $350.  However, they also did a culture for the yeast infection she had on her vulva area, gave me antibiotics, prescription shampoo and I can't remember what else.  It was pricey for sure though.  They sent me home with Baytril and Ketaconazale for the staph & pseudomonas, but then called after the results came back and said we needed to switch to Cipro (and stop the Baytril), so the culture & sensitivity was worth it.

Hopefully this won't be as problematic as it was for us, but all told, we spent close to $1000 trying to clear this up.  To this day, it still isn't 100% and I put topicals on it to keep it from flaring up.

Ziggy has had numerous infections, at one point, he had them back to back at least 3 times, and was on antibiotics forever it seemed. Since he has gotten older, they have decreased in frequency, and doesnt get them a lot. He has, however, just gotten over one, as it is big time allergy season here. During this time of year I have to keep him on allergy meds every day.

I will tell her all of this when I call her tonight.  She will probably take him to the vet this weekend.  Thanks so much for all your help.
