Oscar's problem has a name...thanks Callie and Jane

For those who have emailed (on and off board) about my little Dachshund a word from the vet. Oscar has a combination of sarcoptic mange (which I suspected) and a very severe vaccination-induced immune reaction called vasculitis. It is easily treated and should be completely cured however the vet has recommended no further vaccinations, ever, as future reactions are likely to get far worse. He even went so far as to write a letter to the state advising that the dog's health is jeopardized by rabies vaccine and asking for a waiver for the life of the dog. (Waiver or not, I think I'll probably not get the rabies as it is most likely to be the cause of the problem...I'd rather pay the fine than risk the dog's death. He sure isn't going to get rabies seeing as he's only outside while with me and there's not much in the way of wildlife in my neck of the "woods";).
So for all who helped me...thank you. Especially Callie and Jane who were particularly kind (the LymDyp worked very well for the mange) in their concern for my sweet little treasure (lately also known as the money pit). The Chi Institute vet was a wonder and for $183.00 I got a diagnosis and a cure!

Yippee!! I'm SO glad you got a real diagnosis.  I'm so glad you've gotten some help.

Query this vet seriously about how to boost the immune system the right way -- the vaccinosis will impact everything.  I've got lots of info on immune building (I sent you the mange stuff didn't I?) but with this diagnosis you want the vet hand in hand with you.

Please holler if I can help.  Callie

Congratuations on finding a vet who admits to vaccinations causing probems...one in a million I'm sure!  I don't blame you about the rabies vaccine either..to be honest, I think its another way of making money....

YEAH!! So glad you have a definitive answer and a 'plan of attack' to get things better. I have been checking often to see how things turned out. And you found a new vet to boot- awesome.

Because my golden retriever, who will be 7 in Aug, had a severe reaction to her set of annuals, my vet said she was not to get them anymore (except law required rabies) unless there was a serious outbreak of one of the diseases.  A year ago there was distemper here and after we talked it over, I elected to get her the distemper ONLY as it had been 3 years.  She did just fine.

Our state ruled several years ago that rabies only had to be given every 3 years.  However, the brains that they are, said each county and each city could make their own laws.  The city over rides the county, the county overrides the state.  Well, both my county and my city say every year (I am workoing to try to get that changed.)  When KayCee to her rabies a year ago, he marked the certificate good for 3 years (the county 5 miles up the road is every 3 years) and he said they are one and the same injection, the 1 year and the 3 years.  He said if anyone gives me any trouble about being in this city, this county and having a 3 years instead of a 1 year vax, send them to him.  he will tell them she is not a suitable candidate for yearly rabies vax.
