My sister's pup might have diabetes..

We had been noticing that Willow (7mo JRT) had been drinking water and going to the bathroom way too frequently. So we went to the vet yesterday to get some tests done for diabetes. Has anyone ever dealt with a dog with this condition? Poor little girl...[:(]

Drinking water and going to the bathroom frequently can be signs of a lot of things other than diabetes. I'm assuming the vet has already check for a urinary tract infection since they are already doing diabetes tests?

But, in answer to your question, I do know a dog who lives with diabetes. He's a 14 year old german shepherd and he and the family deal with it just fine. He gets a shot daily and his diet is very carefully controlled. However, it was very scary when he was diagnosed and during the time when they were trying to get his treatments and medicines exact. He did have episodes of shock and convulsions and a period of a coma-like state. But like I said, he is fine now and takes his shots like a champ.

Yes, my best friend's dog had diabetes.  This was many years ago, actually -- and Mandy had allergies and back then (like over 25 years ago) the only thing they knew to do for her was prednisone.  After a year, Mandy had diabetes and within a year went blind.

BUT ... altho she was only 3 when diagnosed wtih diabetes, she lived to be almost 18!!!  Lorraine (my friend) gave her shots every day, and altho she was on a pretty careful diet, she lived a long happy life and it was NOT a problem to get her shot!!  She would come trotting right to Raine for her shot.

That could easily be a UTI or any number of things.....

I hope the pup doesn't have diabetes, but like the others said, it's quite controllable.
