chlostridia

    chlostridia

Has anyone's dog had chlostridia?  And if so, what antibiotic has  worked for it?  My dog has mucous covered stools, so I assume he has not gotten rid of his chlostridia.  He has been off of his antiobiotic for 2 days.  He was fine while he was on it.  He was taking Clavamox, after Metronidazole didn't work.  Now I will have to go to the Vet again and see what else he wants to try.

Do you know what strain of clostridium your dog has? C. perfringens is a very hardy bacteria that can be "stress-induced". Any change in the dogs normal routines can spark an outbreak. These bacteria are normal flora of the digestive tract and a dog can go for a lifetime and never have any trouble. I have seen dogs die in the span of 24 hours with it. It's a very aggressive bacteria under the right (or wrong) conditions.
Some times, antibiotics make the diarrhea worse.
There are so many strains of clostridium, that it would be hard to advise without knowing WHICH strain your are reffering to.

I don't know what strain it is...I'll have to ask the vet on Monday.  My dog does have Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which complicates everything he gets.

I would think the IBD is the cause of the mucous in the stool. Clostridium tends to cause more watery stool with or without blood with lethargy and refusal to eat. You may want to get another culture to make sure the clostridial infection has past. My feelings would be that if s/he had a clostridial infection, that it has passed and you are now dealing with IBD/colitis.
I have some research that I did on colitis/IBD for college, if you are interested I can email it to you. Hope it's helpful and that you can understand it. PM me if you would like me to send it to you (it's eight pages long, so quoting would be way long!).
