PLEASE don't think doxycycline is a 'bad' drug.  IT IS NOT.  Not at all.  It's not even a drug that is closely tied with IMHA like some are ... it's just that this particular drug somehow intensified the body's auto-immune response against Billy's blood so FOR HIM it's a mega no-no.

Callie, I am not sure if you remember Janet-Rose posting link about HW and doxycycline.  It said:

"Recent research has led to the discovery of a parasite called Wolbachia that lives symbiotically inside heartworms. Studies indicate that this parasite contributes to the adverse effects of both heartworm infection and heartworm treatment, including inflammation, embolism and allergic reaction. Treatment with doxycycline for 30 days to kill the Wolbachia parasite weakens the heartworms and makes them unable to reproduce, lessens their adverse effects on the body and greatly reduces the chance of adverse reaction during heartworm treatment. "

The old field Pointer in my avatar was treated with drug for 7 weeks because of Ehrlichia.  This was prior to HW treatment.  Even though we did not know it at the time, I believe this is what saved her life during HW treatment.  This dog had a very hard time with the treatment.

Anyway, I forwarded the link and info to the organization's president.  It just so happens that there is another older dog with HW that they were just about to start the HW treatment.  The pres discussed this with the organization's vet and decided to change treatment course.

RAH RAH for Billy!!!  And Callie, I'm so glad you were able to identify what really hit you so hard about the news and begin rationalizing your way out of it before any of us had to give you the butt kicking you asked for! [sm=biggrin.gif]

I'm so so happy for Billy... and for you, David, Kee and Luna!  Love the pics of Billy too... could his hair BE any better?

Yay - what great news to start off my day and I love that picture of Billy [:D]

That particular expression is my dog HAVING A BLAST at the vet's.  (He has one of the techs TRAINED to play 'fingers under the door' with Billy -- it is just too freakin funny to see this dog 'stake out' the door -- he will watch for an HOUR -- we've timed that -- waiting for Tom to wriggle his fingers under the door (and Billy thinks it is SOOO sad that one of Dr. D's rooms has a door withOUT any free space for Tom to wriggle his fingers -- BUMMER!!!)

Billy loves to have FUN, and if there isn't fun he'll try to make it!!  Even as sick as he's been he has fun.  Even when he winds up getting catheterized while he's there -- well, we can play for treats NOW can't we???

I encourage it.  Yes I surely do.  Please -- have fun and play with my dog while he's here, and I'll provide treats for ya all to do it!!

DPU -- thanks -- I didn't want this to be a "dis Doxycycline" thing -- IMHA simply likes to use odd things for triggers.  ANYTHING truly can trigger it -- any antibiotic, any vax, and it doesn't even NEED a reason sometimes.

Callie, I'm WAAAYYYY behind on lots of threads and posts in the past 2-3 weeks, so I'm just now reading this whole thread about Billy's latest scare.  I'm so relieved to get to the end of the posts and read that things turned out NOT to be the nightmare they seemed to be at the start.

I always have Billy (and you) cross my mind often, especially when I see my neighbor's Cocker, Duncan (he's black, but still makes me think of Billy with his curly ears!).  I was just dog-sitting Duncan last Friday, thinking of Billy, but I had no idea you were in the midst of this.

The photo of him at the vet is truly a grinning face --- how wonderful that he's so happy there, despite what could be some pretty awful associations with vet offices.  I know I wouldn't be grinning like that if I was at a doctor's office or hospital after the number of visits he's had!

Billy, you are the epitome of a sooper-trooper.  I would give you the biggest hug and longest ear rub if I were there to see you!  You're a special and sweet boy to a lot of us!
