Flea control for lawn.

    Flea control for lawn.

I was wondering if anyone has put anything on their yard to help kill the fleas.  My vet recommended Over n' Out and Seven 5% dust.  We tried Over n' Out but still have the problem.  The dogs do have frontline on but with all the stray cats the yard was full of fleas when we moved in.  And other suggestions on what i could use that would be safe for my dogs to be around?

    Hello there [:)]

All flea treatments for your lawn will require repeated reapplications if there are constantly new flea populations brought into it. So you could think about fencing your yard (to keep stray dogs out for instance), while at the same time getting rid of the cats. How to do that? Well, you could have a 8 foot wooden wall around your yard... as I do. Less drastically, you could trap them and then bring them to a shelter or release them in a field 10 miles away, or you could put cat deterrent all around your property boundaries - that also would require regular refreshing though, so catching them and ridding your area of strays is the only longterm solution for that. In short: without ridding the area of the hosts, you will never rid the area of the parasite. [:)]

However, with some proper medication (Frontline or K9 Adv works, but I like Sentinel best and actually use it in conjunction with K9A) there can be a flea party out there and your dogs still will not carry them around.

    Good luck [:)]

I say stray because when we moved in at the beginning of January they were but now my neighbor says she brought them all in which means she lets them roam the neighborhood and just feeds them.  We are getting a taller fence when we get the money too but till then i have to chase a cat out before i put the dogs back there.  But if i keep the cats out and keep frontline on the dogs would just one treatment of the lawn treatment work to kill off most of the fleas?

I know alot of folks around are "anti-chemicals". This is what we do every year about this time. We use a bag of bug killer stuff called MAX - about a two foot tall red bag in Home Depot-I think it was made by Ortho? It is powder/tiny granular product that you use with a lawn spreader. Took about no time. I did have to keep him off the grass for 48 hours but I kept him off for a week until a real soaker of a rain storm (four hours of driving rain). Kills roaches, cutworms, ants, fleas, etc.
Cauton!!! it is deadly to water fowl and fish if they come into contact with it/eat it.

I asked my vet which ones to use because my pug had an allegic reaction to fleas on his face.  He said Over N' Out which has the same active ingredent as Frontline but it didn't seem to work.  I was wondering if anyone used that Seven which is actually for fleas.

Ill try MAX but right now FL is in sort of a drought and can never tell when it will rain so just wait the 48 hours? Don't want to put my pups in danger at all.

Food grade DE works very well and it's not something you have to worry about as far as chemicals.

We have not any fleas since we installed sprinkler systems in our last 2 homes.  Its been 15 years.  Prior to that, we always had fleas.

I would water the lawn, with an ocsillating head, best at 5-10 am to prevent brown patch, on a regular basis for at least 20 - 30 minutes.  We run ours about 3 times a week  Its good for the lawn to encourage deep roots to water deeply and longer.

    Water drowns fleas.

I would stay away from dog parks or ohter peoples lawns after you get your flea problem under control.

I called and they said to "keep him off the lawn for 48 hours, just to be safe he doesn't get it on his feet and then possibly injest it". I waited until a good rain several days later just because I figured what the heck - best be safe then sorry. Besides, he like the extra quick walks. Maybe just water it in really well?

We didn't use Sevin after the first time because of two reasons. 1) it didn't work really well but that may be due to localised resistance  2) the powder it kicked up made me go into coughing ands sneezing fits and my husband coughed for three days.

Good luck. We are relatively bug free and are flea free for the past few years. I think this remarkably good as we are the corner lot where every creature has to stop and make a 'deposit' (don't get me started on asking them to pick up after themselves). Plus there are feral cats full of fleas who like to sleep under our deck out back.

Diatomaceous earth ( food grade ) is the best way to kill almost all lawn insects. You can also use it on your carpets, directly on your pets and IN your pet's food to kill parasites.  Why would you use chemicals around your pets ???

There is a great site that sells organic lawn insect and fire ant killers that are made from tree oils. They are very effective and very safe.  [linkhttp://www.cleanairgardening.com]www.cleanairgardening.com[/link]

I'm going to try to the DE, do they sell it in stores or just on that site?  I really don't want to use chemicals around my pups but I hate seeing my pug with his face all puffy from flea allergies.  I wanted to get this taken care of before his medicine runs out so he doesn't get it again.

Try calling a gardening supply shop or someplace that sells agricultural supplies for farmers.  That's the only place I can think of to get it in 50# bags. Sometimes you can get it at healthfood stores but that would just be in small quanities.

nice site. i have been using a very toxic fire ant killer. it works really well, it is just hard to keep our puppy away from it. i think i am going to try one of the products that was on that site to see how well it works for fire ants.
