Very Worried! Dropped Baby Boy off at vet this morning.

We had our little guy neutered last thursday. He seemed totally fine Friday and Saturday. Sunday came he wasn't eating, but seemed fine. This morning however, he threw up bile 3 times. I didn't want to take a chance so I brought him in. He wasn't too happy to say the least. The vet said it could be any number of things, but doubted it was from surgery. He is still quite alert, but still not eating the same. I'm so worried, ever since we lost our dog last year, I've been a worry wart with Jackson. I'm really hoping after getting some fluids he is fine.

Anyone, have any idea what it may be?

Late Friday I noticed my 11 year old golden retriever had runny poop.  Saturday morning he wouldn't eat breakfast, but I managed to get him to take his thyroid pill in some bread--which he almost at once threw up with yellow foam.  Normally he follows me every step I take, but Saturday he stayed in the diningroom all day.  Later in the day I boiled him part of a boneless chicken breast and some rice--not much --and he ate aboug 2/3 of it.  He still had runny poop. I called my vet's but they wre close for the holidays.

Sunday monring he again refused breakfast and I skipped trying to give him his thyroid.  Around noon I did him an egg in the microwave and he did eat it.  By mid afternoon he was acting much perkier.  I chicken breast and rice for him again that night and he ate it all.  Yesterday he wa back to his old pester-roo-cuss self, trying to get his head under my arm as I typed. butting me, trotting with tail up & waggging instead of walking slow with tail down!  He scarfed down his breakfast and his supper.

I am on several forums and I saw the story repeated on several.  Seems there is a virus that is hitting these dogs, much like the 24 virus we humans get--that can last from 12 to 48 hours.

Hope you  baby just has something like that and will be fine in no ttime.

Thanks so much for your words and story. It really helps to hear others stories and words. I so hope it's just a virus as well and he is back home soon. He just got home and is going to be mad at us for bringing him back. Again thank you and I welcome any others comments.

I think Joey had the same thing. Runny stool on friday and saturday (he woke me up a few times that night to go outside), he didn't keep his food down on friday either. We gave him chicken and rice over the weekend and he's back to his normal self now. I guess it was some kind of virus?
I hope your baby is doing better!!!

You did the right thing bringing your dog to the vet. I hope he gets well soon. Let us know what happens.

The vet called, but didn't give too much information, but enough I suppose. They ruled out anything being stuck and told us he is still very alert and not too happy to be there. LOL! He did have a semi-hard bowel movement and have sent that for tests, believing he has a bug.

I'm really hoping we can bring the little guy home tonight. The poor little fella has been through so much the past 5 days, first neutered and now this. Thank you for all your thoughts and I will keep you all posted.

This site is so nice to have...cheers to whomever designed it!

So we pick up Jackson tomorrow. It ends up he has a parasite, something called Coccidia. He will remain in hospital over night and come home tomorrow. So he's going to be alright. Pheww!

Thanks again for all you words.

Coccidia can be quite nasty.  I'm happy to hear Jackson will be okay and will be home tomorrow.  Sending positive thoughts for a speedy recovery. [sm=happy.gif]

I'm glad to hear that he's going to be okay. [:)

I am glad to hear that is is nothing really serious, altho that is a nasty thing to have.  I have been reading on several of the boards about it, but none of my dogs has ever had it, so i really don't know much about it.  Just follow vet's instrurctions--and i can tell from you posts that you will follow to a tee--and he will be just fine.

I think he is depressed because you took his testicles. [:@]

I think he is depressed because you took his testicles.

You have GOT to be kidding.  And that is not terribly helpful.

I'm glad to hear that it's something "simple" that turned out to be the problem.  We've had issues with coccidia, and it really isn't a huge big deal to treat...sometimes, they just pick it up despite our best efforts.

Thank you glenmar, it's really good to hear stories like that. I have to be honest I was so worried. I brought him his blanket he was happy and can't wait to get him tonight. The poor little man only got to come home for 2 days then back there, at least they treat him very well.

Thanks again for all your words, it REALLY helped ease my worries.

I really wish you could pinpoint where they contracted it from.

One of our wiser members might be able to pinpoint WHERE this is picked up, but me?  I just figure its a bit like kids picking up the cold virus.....sometimes stuff just happens.  When mine are HW tested every year they are also tested for worms and parasites.  IF there is a problem, then I'll have them retested every 3 months....so far we've only had the one little episode.

And please know that by nuetering your little guy that you have probably increased his life expectancy and spared him from all sorts of horrid cancers.
