For me personally it would have to be a great deal of water for me to worry.  And even then as long as it wasnt repetitive I still wouldnt worry.  Is this accompained by anything else?  Or just the drinking?  Im sure it depends on the food your feeding and his activity level.  How much water are you talking about?

Our Ollie (Great Dane) is ALWAYS looking for water. ALWAYS!  I used to ask his dad all the time, "do you think he is alright, he's always drinking!"  My Bubblegum now on the other hand hardly drinks water except after coming in from the outside.  I put at least a cup or cup and a half of water in her kibble just to make sure she is getting water.

Is he just drinking more when he goes to the bowl, or is he physically getting up more to get water?

OT: Dyan, it's been way too long since you posted Ollie pics.

Mattie use to do this when she was a puppy.... DRINK DRINK DRINK....

You know what stopped it and balanced her back out....

Pedialyte.... yip add that to the water..... you can do 1/2 and 1/2 to start and see how that goes...

My Vet recommended that after we checked her for everything such as diabetes etc...but she was only a puppy... Some puppies are huge water drinkers and to much isn't good....

To try and answer your question from my experience with too much water drinking. I guess there really isn't  too much, if a dog wants water they should have it BUT if they are drinking more than usual it maybe a sign. I believe there are several disease's that one of the  sign's is increased thirst, I would keep an eye out wouldn't hurt.

The medical daily H20 intake for a dog is the following:
    30mL/lb or 64mL/kg every 24 hours

So in your case that would be 0.75 Liters or 750 mL every 24 hours.

Excessive drinking could be a sign of many illnesses like diabetes however if your dog is not displaying any other abnormal behaviours I would not worry about it yet. Is he peeing as much as drinking or is he absorbing more than normal? i am not a vet though....so keep an eye out like everyone else is suggesting!

his peeing habits are annoying. it always takes him forever to find a spot. at one point he would lift his leg and nothing would come out at all. but that has kind of gone away.

What is the age of your dog? Does this dog appear to be overweight for his size or have a sagging abdomen?
Excessive drinking in overweight dogs (or a sagging abdomen) that are older that are also displaying less energy (lethargy) among other signs can be a sign of Cushings disease. You might want to have a some blood test run to rule this out.

I was worried about the same thing a few months ago so I took Simba to the vet he told me because I was feeding him dry food its makes him want to drink alot as the food does not contain water.

So I was worrying for nothing but it took a trip to the vet to ease my mind!!

I've always encouraged my dog Bailey to drink extra water in order to keep her urine as delute as possible. She is a Bichon and is prone to bladder stones. Last November she started drinking even more than I was giving her with her food. After bloodtests she was diagnosed with cancer in her anal glad. This type of cancer has symptoms of high calcium in the blood. The calcium in the blood causes excessive thirst. I feel very strongly that if your dog is drinking more water than you're used to seeing him or her drink, then it's very important to visit the vet and see if there's a medical reason why. Peace of mind is priceless.
