4 month old German Shepherd vomiting and will not eat

The vet told me to go tomorrow and talk to him.  He thinks that parvo is pretty much ruled out.  He does eat, just a very very little, and it looks like its only to please me. He ate a couple of spoonfuls of rice a while ago as well as about 7 slices of ham.  It took a while, but he did it.  He also drank a lot after he ate that.  I hope this is a good sign.  The vet told me to reworm him and he's thinking about coccidia, but he said he needs a stool sample.  Coccidia doesn't seem to match up, but I guess a very serious case would.  And it would make sense since my dog loves to eat stool for some reason.  Of course I try my best to discourage him and disipline him, but its like an addiction :)

I looked on the internet and the thing that really stuck out was "bloat."  However, bloat is something that should kill the dog quickly, but the symptoms of it matched my dogs symptoms to the T except for the fact that my dog doesn't try to eat

Oh well, he's playing now with the little dog we have, but he's been having spurts where he plays a little.   I'm going to watch him close tonight and keep him hydrated and offer him some more rice later and see how it goes.  I'll let you guys know tomorrow.  THanks.

No ham if you can help it - way too much sodium in it.  Can you go to the store and get some hamburger?

Please go to the vet first thing in the morning!

What are you worming him with?

Rice is NOT enough.  Boil some hamburger and drain it good and add it into the rice.

I have some ground meat in the freezer.  What if I wash the ham.  It was actually turkey breast, but I'm sure it did have a lot of sodium; anything in a pack like that would.  I didn't think about the sodium.  I just assumed that he probably needed it since he doesnt' really eat.

I wormed him with nemex.  The vet oked it.

Ground meat (hamburger?) is good.  I usually brown it slowly in a pan so it still has some fat and taste to it (drain the fat before giving it to him).  You can boil it too but I usually don't.  I don't think washing the ham does any good - the sodium is in the meat.  Turkey would be better than ham.

No, any ham is full of chemicals and nitrates.  While I will eat it now and then, I don't let the dogs touch it.

It sounds like you are giving him PROCESSED luncheon meat?  That's full of chemicals as well and high salt, so no, rinsing it isn't gonna help.  I'd suggest taking the ground meat from the freezer and dropping it in some boiling water.....that'll thaw AND cook it.  I wouldn't eat plain rice either, so I'm not surprised your pup won't

What had the puppy eaten on Friday morning before getting sick?
    • Silver
The turkey was the more expensive turkey breast.  I already gave it to him before I posted so I guess it doesnt' matter.  I jsut won't do it again.

Before the dog got sick he only ate dog food.  I don't ever feed him anything else because I was always under teh impression that it made them poo a lot and I keep him in the house.

My dad said that he saw the little dog we have dragging an old fish head across the yard.  I guess it picked it up from someone's trash.  I don't know if my dog got it at all, but my dad threw it when he saw it.  It's possible my dog ate on it.  He eats on everything he sees from my school books to grasshoppers.

Also, and more seriously, my dad told me today that there was a lot of rat poison around the house.  We (my parents) just moved to another house and there was rat poison everywhere inside (in the boxes still).  My mom threw it or put it up, and I haven't seen any laying around the house, but I don't want to rule anything out.

YIKES! Rat poison, shoot, if I were you I'd be checking every corner for that!  IT will sure kill your dog if he eats enough of it,,,not sure, maybe doesnt' even take much.
I agree on the burger,,,something like that he should probably like to eat, that will keep him going.   I also scramble eggs when my doggies dont feel well. I usually give them raw but when their not feeling well, I scramble them in a pan without oil or butter. Mine LOVE it!
I'm REALLY HAPPY that your vet wants you to come and talk to him, it sounds like he will help. I think its really great of you to try to work something out with him and I thinkg its really great of him to let you!
    GOOD LUCK!!!

Well, yeah, your puppy is going to put anything in his mouth because that's what puppies do.  It's YOUR job to make sure he doesn't eat anything that will make him sick - like rotting fish heads and rat poison.  Is your puppy just let loose outside to roam?  If he does get better I suggest you make some changes so something like this doesn't happen again.  It sounds to me like he ate something he shouldn't have.

Also, dog.com is a great place to learn about nutrition for your dog so that when he gets better you can get him on a good quality dog food.  One a good quality dog food he will poop less and be healthier.  You sound like you really want to do right by this puppyso once you get past this think about getting him on a high quality food and maybe learn about supplementing that with homecooked or raw.

I don't know what happened, but I had him outside for a bit since I gave him that worm medicine and I just went out and he ate some dog food.  I am defrosting some ground meat and I gave him two milk bones and he ate them both.  This is hard dog food and hard milk bones so him eating it is saying a lot!  I hope this is a sign for the better.

C'mon man.  I do take things out of his mouth when I see that they are things he shouldn't have.  However, I, like you, can't watch my dog every second.  I didn't see him with any rat poison or anything, but I'm just trying not to rule out possibilities.  My puppy is left inside, but I do let him out to use the bathroom and I don't always watch him every second.  I do watch him a lot though.  If it was something that he ate, I'm quite confident that I couldn't have avoided it.

No one was being critical..  But, the fact is that it IS your job to protect your pup from himself.  And yep, that means either watching him EVERY single second or keeping him in a puppy safe spot.  I foster and my last litter was SEVEN german shepherd pups.  We had our routine...potty, with me outside with them, breakfast, potty time again outside with me and some play and training time, then they'd veg out around me while I was on the computer for a bit, and then go back into their exercise pen for a nap to give me a couple hours break.  If they were NOT in the ex pen, I, or someone, was with them all the time.  And that was IN a saferoom  But there's always something they can find to get into.....thats just a fact of pups.

No, you can't watch him every second and I don't watch mine every second.  But if they are outside they are in a secured, fenced yard and there's nothing in there they can get into and I don't let a puppy go anywhere unsupervised except my yard.  In the house they are in the same room as I am or they are crated.  You just can't trust a puppy at all.

That's great that he's eating dog food.  Remember though that he hasn't eaten much in the last few days and his digestive tract has been upset, so if you can get him to eat rice and hamburger rather than dog food or dog cookies it would be better for him.

    Sounds like he's feeling better!

I wasn't meaning it as a snap back, I just meant that I do watch my dog a lot.   I don't even know if its something he ate.  I just didn't want to rule out possibilities.  It could be some kind of virus.
