hunger vomiting?

    hunger vomiting?

Occassionally my cocker spaniel will vomit early in the morning, before we feed her. This isn't a new thing and it doesn't happen often, maybe once a month. I've heard that this happens because she's hungry, although i'm not sure who i've heard that from. Does anyone have any confirmation on that idea or any other new ideas of why she might be doing that. thanks!

Well, Willow will vomit just bile if she's gone too long without food.  Her stomach produces a lot of acid and if there is no food for it to work on, then she does toss up.  I spoke with the vet about this and it's pretty common.  And, unless it became an every day thing to just leave it alone.  If it was more often I think she mentioned something about using Pepcid or some type of anti acid before bedtime.

I give my dogs a buiscuit before bed, and that seems to help with the early morning upset tummies, especially on weekends when I like to sleep in. I have to feed them early if I'm going to be out for an evening as well, they get so used to having full bellies at certain times of the day that they anticipate the meal, and when it doesn't come Romeo will vomit bile.

Sammy has done this before as well, I just feed him twice a day and it solves it - once around 5:30 am and once around 5 pm or so

That is a possibility, and I avoid it by feeding my dogs each an Innova or California Naturals health bar in the a.m.  You could do it at bedtime, perhaps.

Conrad does this too, and Marlowe does more occaisionally. If I think of it, in the evenings (especially if I'm planning on sleeping in the next morning, or have to give them their dinner early), I just give them a snack. A few cookies, some informal training time with kibble, a bite of whatever I'm eating if it's dog-approved.

Conrad has always done this, no matter what food he's been on. Because he's big, we keep him running pretty lean (less stress on his joints) and try to err on the side of underfeeding rather than over-feeding, so it makes sense that he'd have an empty tummy if his usual breakfast/dinner schedule is thrown slightly off.

    Ditto the above -

My guys will also vomit yellow bile if I am late getting their breakfast or dinner to them.
    I feed them at 6am and 6pm.

Sometimes the vomitting will also occur if they are chewing on a nylabone or a hoof on an empty stomach;  I guess it gets their stomach juices flowing.  I now give them each half a cookie (small dogs, large cookies!) before they start chewing and this seems to have resolved it.

I also feed a CN health bar at bed time. [;)]

Zoe does this occasionally as well.  I  feed her free choice, but she doesn't always eat.  She usually eats later at night when we are getting ready for bed.

We solved the early morning 'bile vomiting' with a meal before bed.

I was hoping I'd find an answer here for my Shiloh Shepherd vomiting during the night. Unfortunately, I already feed twice a day with  yogurt for digestion, a treat midday and a treat before bedtime (treat in this case is biscuit) but she has been getting worse and worse with vomiting mostly bile, sometimes no longer having an appetite in the morning. Even the Pepcid no longer helps. I suffer from GERD myself so I can understand that the spring (season change) can make it worse for a little while, but it's really annoying because I keep trying to find a way to improve it this for her, and for me since yellow on blue carpet isn't a good mix, but to no avail. She's also reacting more and more to the treats she used to eat easily. Her food is Eagle Pack but I'm thinking of trying something new in case she's developed some problem with Eagle for some reason. I'm at a loss, really. I feel so sorry for her. The vet doesn't seem to know quite what direction to turn - we've already been through lots of expensive blood tests and x-rays at a time when she had zero appetite, but nothing was wrong that could be seen. I lost my last Shiloh Shepherd from cancer so I'm really starting to be afraid of this situation.

Anyone know of any really good digestive aids for dogs?

They say that Slippery Elm is good for tummy complaints, internal swelling and stuff.  You mix a teaspoon full with their food (for a dog) and it is meant to do wonders for digestion etc.

I guess when you think about it, when we humans have no food, we get faint and feel sick, but we control it, I guess its just the same for dogs, but when they feel sick, they actually vomit.
Im a firm believer of twice a day feeding.  If your dog is sick at night, maybe give him a wee bit more food to "tie him over" until breckie.  Maybe even reduce his breakfast to compensate for the larger meal.

good luck... I hate it when my boy and girl are sick.
