Below 99.5 is usually not good and above around 102.5 is not good. When dogs are stressed or excited their temps may be really off so the best time to get the temp is when the dog is at rest. You may also want to get the temp more than once a few minuets apart just to make sure it wasn't just bad timing when you got it the first time. 106 when at rest or above is when brain damage begins so at that point you want to keep the dog cool.
I prefer to use the ear thermometers but those don't always works as well as the rectal. I just find the ear thermos are less stressful on the animal but if the animal is really sick it's best to do a rectal to get a more accurate reading.
