    fever

Is there a way to tell if a dog has a fever without using a thermometer?
When using a thermometer, do you just cover it and use it rectally?  Is there temp base like ours as far as what's considered a fever?

I believe anything over 102 is a fever in a dog. I use a digital oral and do it rectally. I have one I keep JUST for the dogs so there's no confusion LOL! It's in my dog room. Bit of vaseline and in it goes til it beeps!

ok i'll try that.  shane vomited (just liquid) all over hubby's pillow this morning and again by his feet and now he's laying next to me and he just feels unusually warm and I just wanna make sure he's ok.  I think this morning he just had to go to the bathroom really really bad and instead of waking us up to take him out he just held it and it probably just upset his tummy, he's done that before...and as soon as I brought him out he went potty instantly and seems to be ok now, no more throwing up and is just sleeping like he usually does this time of day.
    thanks gina

Below 99.5 is usually not good and above around 102.5 is not good. When dogs are stressed or excited their temps may be really off so the best time to get the temp is when the dog is at rest. You may also want to get the temp more than once a few minuets apart just to make sure it wasn't just bad timing when you got it the first time. 106 when at rest or above is when brain damage begins so at that point you want to keep the dog cool.

I prefer to use the ear thermometers but those don't always works as well as the rectal. I just find the ear thermos are less stressful on the animal but if the animal is really sick it's best to do a rectal to get a more accurate reading.

I really hope Shane is alright, big ((hugs)) and good vibes are being sent his way[:)]

thanks, I haven't been able to find my thermometer, but he seems to be ok.  He's still sleeping, but he's always sleeping, but he doesn't feel warm to the touch anymore, well not abnormally so.
Miya ended up throwing up this afternoon as well so I'm wondering if maybe they got into something.  At least with both of them it was just liquid and they're acting fine.
