Hip dysplasia....could it be or am I overthinking this...

Ok, so on Sunday Beau our 5 month old German Shorthaired Pointer was fine.. playing, wrestling and running a muck all ove rthe house with our two little terriers. So we put him in his crate for a bit, took him out and all of the sudden he wont walk on his right rear leg.... limping, holding it up. So he is still doing this...trys to walk on it, but its obvious its still not back to normal. I have tried moving it about, putting pressure on it to determine where it hurts, but he doesnt yelp or whine, just nibbles my hand a bit. The vet said to keep him off of it, so we have been limiting his activity.... either in his crate or he is out without the other two so he is still. He goes in on Fri for neutering so they can look at it if its not better, but I am concerned....could he have hip dysplasia....or is it possible its just a strain or sprain....I figure its no fractured as there is no swelling and he seems fine otherwise...if allowed he runs around like a crazy man...just hobbling a bit of course.

Really have no suggestions for you but will be praying it's nothing too serious and will easily resolve.

It may just be a sprain or strain, but it certainly can't hurt to ask you vet to investigate further.

I don't have any experience with this, but here's some good info:

Let's hope it's just a strain---let us know what the vet has to say.

Could be this, could be that....I could give you a whole list of things it could be, just best to wait for the vet have a look.  Only true way to check for HD is to have the hips x-rayed but at 5 mo. it may still very early to tell because the bones are still developing unless it's very sever.

When Gizmo was diagnosed with HD she also had a torn crucit ligament and after doing x-rays on her not only had we discoved the torn crucit but discoved her HD and it was taken care of very early.  Had she not torn her crucit I may have not know about the HD till later.

My first thought is ACL injury....which a vet would need to look at. They can range from tweaks to outright tears or ruptures...

I was going to ask if the vet checked for this yet. One day last summer, after running longer than usual in a soggy field, Jessie started limping that evening. I had the vet check her the next day and he determined it was not a ACL but a strain and advised no exercise for a week, followed by 10 minute walks, gradually increasing the length of the walks. I think the reason she strained her muscles was because the ground was very soft from the rain. I hope there's nothing serious wrong with your pup; let us know how he does.

No one can say what it is without truly examining him, and the perfect time will be friday when you bring him in for neutering - since he will be under anesthesia, it may be worthwhile to have a full orthopedic exam performed, and if you want to, a set of hip xrays. While yes OFA waits until 2 years old to certify, animals can absolutely be diagnosed with HD this young. This past week, I had a 6 month old lab I diagnosed while she was under for her spay, and 2 months ago I diagnosed a 5 month old border collie with severe hip displaysia, and he was able to have surgery ASAP for it.
