    Uodate on eye problem..HELP needed!

My brothers Sibe,Phantom,is a year old.Healthy in every way until he got his nuetering done about a month ago.

After he got home, one eye started oozing a bit of greenish goop, and I then noticed what appeared to be a milky disk over the pupil. The pupil seems contracted and not moving.White of his eye are red and bloodshot. The cornea seems to go from pink, back to blue, depending on the light.

I just got off the phone with my brother, and now the other eye is going through this, and he seems to be losing his vision.

Phantoms vet has never seen this before, and is surprized by how fast this is progressing.

If its cataracts,he says he has never seen them happen so fast.Possible blood  and pressure in the eyes.

There are no dog eye doctors in my area,or even state as far as research shows, and it looks like Boston is the only place to go..

Has anyone gone through anything like this, and does anyone know of an eye specialist in the north east region near N Y S?

Thanks...were all trying to get this taken care of before the poor pup goes blind.Any help or suggestion appreciated..

Poor Phantom;  This link discusses six diseases of a dog's eyes in good detail;   [linkhttp://www.terrier.com/breed/eye.php3]http://www.terrier.com/breed/eye.php3[/link]

This link has a picture of a dog with an eye disease called pannus; [linkhttp://www.petplace.com/dogs/pannus-chronic-superficial-keratitis/page1.aspx]http://www.petplace.com/dogs/pannus-chronic-superficial-keratitis/page1.aspx[/link] .

Is there any veterinary teaching hospitals in your area; it's likely that they could help your brother's dog.

That does not sound like cataracts...I'd go to Boston to a specialist, if that is closest.  My Java has cataracts...

I'm not sure what NYS is...smile

NYS would be New York State - where IS he?  If he's in NY State then Cornell U- -- you don't GET better than Cornell to be honest.  (middle of Route 17 between Wellsville and Elmira) -- or Tufts or Angels in Boston.  Tufts is a vet school, Angels is just a heck of a good vet specialty hospital.

If I had to pick among the 3 - would probably be Cornell.

Phantoms vet tried contacting Cornell, and was told they won't look at the dog..I think that its odd,and told my brother to contact them himself..

It would seem to have something to do with the surgery it seems. Did he get any vaccinations at the time of surgery?
There is a vaccine called Adeno1, it's not used much anymore due the 'blue eye' adverse reaction that is prevalent (so Adeno2 is used instead).

My other thought is that something was used in the eyes during surgery so they wouldn't dry out. Maybe the wrong thing was inadvertantly used. I have a dog who had the wrong eye ointment used during leg surgery, it was meant to keep the eyes moist. Apparently the label must have rubbed off or someone didn't read it, but it was the type used to dialate the pupils. So for many days his pupils were huge and he was extremely sensitive to sunlight but eventually it wore off, and he was fine.

I just wonder if someone used the wrong thing in your brother's dogs eyes. The end could have also been contaminated with bacteria or something else (say if it was a wound ointment or ear ointment) and maybe harmful to the eye.

These are all just thoughts, they most likely don't apply but I thought I'd throw them out there just in case.

I do think an ophthamologist appointment asap is needed as this dog's sight may be lost from what you explained.
I would get everything the vet or his technicians may have used during the surgery too, vaccination and the info for them also if they were administered.

    That is odd...

Whew, I finally found this for you.  I hope one of these might be closer to you.

    [linkhttp://www.acvo.org/locate_an_ophthalmologist.htm]http://www.acvo.org/locate_an_ophthalmologist.htm[/link]

Oops the link didn't give the names.  Just type in your state and you will find quite a few ophthalmologists.

I think that's what I just found too, here's the NY results:

(oops same here, as said just type in NY and that's it. About eight veterinary ophthamologists pop up in New York state ). You can also type if CT is you are near the Connecticut border.

Your link did the same thing as mine.  It was my thought that if GA has eye docs, then NY certainly must have some!

This is the website of the vet that treats Dess.  It has considerable information.

Northern breeds are susceptible to VKH...and really that's what I am thinking here. You might give him some info on it..
The age of the dog, the breed, the trigger...all fit in. get him in NOW for VKH because the blindess can be stopped if caught early enough.

Phantom went to see a specialist. It turns out that it is indeed cataracts.

Cornell has been contacted and will do corrective surgery.Expensive but worth it.

My friend took his pig there a few years ago to have surgery and by letter the student doctors work on him,t5hey charged him alot less..I wonder if  by brother can get Phantom into this program.

Thanks for all the responses...I will update after surgery.

Has anyone here ever heard of cataracts coming on so quickly? Also, once they are removed, can they come back?

There are many causes of cataracts and this site has information on why dogs as young as Phantom can develop them;  [linkhttp://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1606&articleid=407]http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1606&articleid=407[/link]

This site says that they can develop rapidly and cannot come back after surgery; [linkhttp://www.animaleyecare.net/diseases/cataract.htm#treated]http://www.animaleyecare.net/diseases/cataract.htm#treated[/link]
