Which heartworm preventitive do you use?  and Why?

My vet and I discussed and chose heartgard for my Shih Tzu.

We have decided to stick with Heartgard.

I use Sentinel. It has a good safety record and it also protects against flea infestations. For the months with heavy tick loads, I use K9Advantix to ward them off. [:)]

I use sentinal for both dogs.

normally use Interceptor, but stopped while using Revolution (used for sarcops). Now back to Interceptor

Heartgard Plus (given every 6 weeks, not 4)

I too use Heartguard Plus.  I spread it to every 6 weeks instead of 4 and I only do 6 doses a year.  I also don't use flea/tick protection.  I do the minimum that I feel is safe enough without risking anything that could be seriously dangerous.

I use Interceptor for my 3 goldens.  And they do get it on the lst of each month year round.  When you can go duck hunting in Jan. and put on OFF instead of thermal underwear and take ice water instead of hot cocoa or coffee, then you just can't afford to go without the HW pills each month.  My vet recommends Interceptor as it controls hook, whip and round worms as well as the heart worms.

we use heartguard plus for both dogs and both cats.
