I do believe there is an asprin made for dogs, or one that is is not as rough on their tummies. I am terrified of the NSAIDs. On one of my golden retriever boards I suspect it killed a pup after spay. She was born with a bad heart and not expected to live, but she did and she improved to the point the cardiologist said she should be spayed because it was very unadvisable for her to ever get pregnant. Well, she came thru the operation just fine, they put her on rimadyl and 3 days later her liver shut down and they had to send her to the bridge. I have always believed it was the rimadyl that did it..as do some of the others on the forum.. Rimadyl seems to attack the liver very fast in some dogs.
You can learn more about NSAIDs and alternatives by going to [link
http://www.dogsadversereactions.com]www.dogsadversereactions.com[/link] and clicking on NSAIDs Section. This site was started by a lady who almost lost her pug to Proheart6, the 6 momth heartworm preventatvie injection that came out about 6 years ago. I lost my one golden to it oct. 16, 2003. Hunter's story & picture is in the Moxidectin Section Victims and Surviors. It was pulled from the market 10 months after Hunter died. But anyway, she has expanded to include the NSAIDs, vax, etc. It is a very informative site.
I don't think you said how old your golden is. My 7 year old, KayCee (littermate to Hunter, the one i lost to PH6) had to h ave both knees operated on for luxating patellas. The first one at 16 months, the other 14 months later. The second was worse bcaue it also required ACL repair.
