    Chewing hair off tail

Ziggy has been showing some strange behavior in the last few days. He chase his tail until he catches it, then chews the hair. It is at the tip of the tail. Should I see my vet? If not, would bitter apple stop him?

This may be better off in the behavior section; it sounds like a behavior issue to me instead of a skin issue. Has he been getting lees exercise lately or has anything changed that would cause stress for him; such as a new dog or cat, moving, etc.?

this is often an anxiety related behavior.

Or it could be an allergy.  Misty would chew just above her tail absolutely raw, and finally fur stopped growing there.  When I changed her food, she stopped chewing and the fur came back within a couple weeks.

could  be any of the above and also could just be anal gland irritation and and tail head sebaceous gland irritation

He's been on the same food since we got him, never had any problems before.

If anything, he's getting more exercise. And I don't think anything's changed, except maybe the weather, its cold now. Dont know whether if that can be a cause.

Misty had been on the same food for years before she started eating herself.  I took Celore for years, until the day I ended up in the ER with an allergic reaction that had me in respiritory distress.  Sometimes allergies happen after a prolonged exposure to the allergen.

Good info, but I went to see the vet today. There was a bruise at the tip of the tail. How he got it, I don't know. Anyway, he's on meds now. And the e-collar.
