    Cost of Meds

    Hello!

I have 1 dog and 3 cats.  The cost of keeping them all flea, tick and heartworm free is terrifically high.  I just called my vet to get current pricing.  Enough doses for the entire season for everybody is going to cost. $670 !!!  Then I jumped online and found an Australian company  [linkhttp://www.petshed.com]www.petshed.com[/link].  They carry the exact same brands etc...the packaging is labeled in metric.  They also have a disclaimer that it may be illegal for someone in the United States to purchase medications from them.  It's the SAME STUFF !  They all have kinds of testimonials from US citizens having done business with them.  The same meds for the entire season will be $360 from petshed.com.
My question is this:   Does anybody know of a reason I should not buy from them?  And why are the costs here sooooooooo much more???

    Thanks!!

The only thing I would say is to make sure the medication you purchase from this place is still in date and has not expired.
Our vet be it the price is steep, they always include a for a 6mo supply one extra vile of flea stuff so you end up with 7viles of flea applications.
Does your vet do the same thing?
From what I could see it was only a 3month supply of Frontline applications for a lower  price, yes.

I buy my Frontline from them.

I think part of the reason it costs less there is because Frontline sells less product in Australia and since there's less demand their prices are lower - which translates into it being less is USD because of the exchange rate.

By the way, another way to cut down on costs of Frontline is to buy a bigger size and divide it between multiple animals (i.e. I divide a vial for the largest size dog among 3 of mine).

I'm kinda careful where I buy meds online.  Meds are not something I want tampered with (have heard stories about outdated medicines, counterfiet meds, etc.) so I only buy from places I trust.  I usually get them at my vet's but this year I bought them from dog.com.  I also do what agile does, and split the dosages.

In my view, ordering medication online is just fine in most cases. It normally is discouraged within the US, as the US has about the highest med-prices worldwide (also for human medication, as you might be well aware). That has no technical reasons, but simply results from the political situation and the lack of regulation, respectively protectionism when it comes to imports.

I always advise people to order online, as it will safe you a ton of money over time. Naturally, you should always check out a company first (which you do already, and agilebcs seems to have good things to say about your company in question), see if the first order you receive is a-ok and so forth.

    Good luck [:)]

All good thoughts.  The company seems to be reputable.  They had lots of good information on the product including expiration dates and links to government regulation sites (I suppose the equivlant of the FDA).  I wish these companies would not be so greedy with the pricing.  My vet does offer 1 free vial when you purchase 6 of the Frontline...but I am still saving .  The Revolution for the cats is the real biggie.  My cat exclusive clinic wants $16.20 per dose.  Pet Shed is asking half that.
Thanks for the advice.  I think we're gonna order...will let you know what happens.

I would rethink using Revolution.  First, after PH6 it accounts for the highest number of deaths, and second, IME it flat out didn't do the job it was supposed to do.  It did NOTHING for fleas and I had the added expense of Frontline, even tho revolution is supposed to take care of everything.  Fleas I can see......those nasty little baby HW I can't.  Plus Revolution puts the toxins IN the dogs systems, while Heartguard is only on the skin.

I had no idea that Revolution had problems.  We actually use it for our cats and have been doing so on the advice of our vet.  Of course this is the only product they sell and they charge an arm and a leg for it.  This would be the third season.  Here in Minnesota we don't have to worry about the winter.  I was on this forum last night and read other posts about Revolution and didn't like what I found.  Will definately be using something else.

Someone, probably Sandra, has links to the incidence of problems with the different HW stuff.  And, as I said, if it didn't work for FLEAS I have to wonder what ELSE it doesn't work for.
