    Does anyone have any clue??

My dog has just suddenly had something go wrong with him, he was healthy and completely fine before yesterday morning. He's very stiff acting like can't stand up on his own, he just lies there and shakes with his neck sort of arched back. When I took him to the vet he had an 104.8 temperature so the vet kept him over night and really thought he would not make it because he just lied there with no movement whatsoever. He's very jumpy and shaky and the doctor thinks it's a neurological problem. I went to see him today and i held him for awhile, he acknowledges certain stuff, he knew i was calling his name and he wagged his tail just a little, but he's still very weak and shaky and can't stand up at all. The doctor got his bloodwork back and a very very low positive came back for lymes disease but the doctor is saying because it's so low this has nothing to do with the way he's acting. He's been giving him fluids and steriods and valum, he says to give it a few days and see if he improves any. I'm soo upset, he's my baby and he was completely fine and happy and then just overnight something like this happens to him!! The doctor was saying the chemical Strychnine can make a dog act this way but he hasn't got ahold of any poision, i watch him constantly. Has anyone had a similiar situation or know someone that has? Any info or advice would be helpful....thanks   =/

Gee I'm so sorry to hear about your baby.  Thats so scary and sad. As I was reading your post, I was going to ask you if it was possible that he got into something....some cleaner...pills that might have gotten dropped...antifreeze that they love the taste of,,, any of the mulches that have cocoa,,, or even food such as chocolate or grapes or one of the foods that are poison to a dog.  Could someone such as a neighbor given him something?  People are rotten at times.   Has he had any medication,,,vaccines,,,,flea, tick or heartworm prevention...just any of these things???
This same thing happened to a little kitty that got brought into where I work,,,she was fine the owner said and then all of a sudden couldn't walk,, couldn't even see it seemed, she thrashed around from side to side in the cage. We hand fed her, gave her medication and did everything we could to save her. My vet swears the cat was poisoned.
I hope so much that your sweet dog pulls thru this.  Please keep us updated.

just a guess but it sounds like a disc problem which needs steroids asap...again this is a guess burt it sure is vet time

You don't mention what kind of a dog it is...and my first thought was the same as dvet's.  Some xrays may be in order,  but please don't wait on this one.

Would a disk problem cause the high fever?

I'm not a vet. But, unfortunately, I'm someone with a LOT of experience with tick borne diseases (TBDs). Two things to keep in mind:

    a) tests are inconclusive. I'm not sure of the whole reason for this, but one is that the TBD scene is developing rapidly and the tests for all the organisms just aren't routine. My Ben has managed in his lifetime to succumb to three different organisms just before they became common enough for vets to recognize them (he is very immune challenged).

    b) If your dog is showing classic signs, it's always worth it to try the antibiotic as a matter of course. Doxycycline isn't that expensive and you'll know in a day or so whether it's doing the trick. The turnaround tends to be very dramatic if you are on the right track.

A third thing to mention is that if you get evidence that this is indeed a TBD (ie, if the dog responds to doxy), stop the steroid ASAP (get your vet's instructions on how to do this safely). Steroids can suppress the immune system to the point that resistant organisms can cause the dog to go into a state of long-term sub-clinical infection.

This is the country's leading expert on veterinary TBD information and the guy who helped my vet identify the last funky thing Ben got, a form of ehrlichia that isn't even vectored through ticks.http://www.cvm.ncsu.edu/docs/ticklab.html

Would a disk problem cause the high fever?

I was thinking the same thing, maybe meningitis or encephalitis of some sort.

I also thought that could be a possibility is a disc problem, the doctor has not offered to give any x-rays, i'm thinking i should call him and ask him too. He just says by the shaking and trembling that it's something wrong in his cerebellum in the brain. He assures me that lyme's disease has nothing to do with this since my dog (cotton is his name) had such a low positive in the test results. Cotton is a miniture poodle approximately 6-7 years old, i got him from a humane society a few years ago and they told me he was about 4 years old. The doctor is waiting on a call back from a neurologist and then he's going to call me and tell me what he said. It just shocks me so bad that he was completely fine and now this, it's soo wierd. I have thought extremely hard about any possible poisions or chemicals he maybe could have gotten to, and everything i have is put up, so i really don't think that he could have got ahold of anything, i mean he's always with me, i take him everywhere and i watch him closely. The doctor says he's just getting worse and worse and i've cried and cried because i don't know what to do or what's wrong w/him  [:(]  The medication's he's taking right now that i know of are just valum to calm the shaking and his nerves, and the doc has been giving him steriods but nothing seems to really make him better. When i saw him yesterday i had a little bit of hope because even though he couldn't stand on his own or anything he was a little more alert, he even wagged his tail a little but today when i saw him today it broke my heart because he was so out of it i dont' even think he really knew it was me that was holding him, but i called his name a few times and he right at me and i could tell he knew it was me and he managed to lick my face one time. It's extremely hard leaving him because as soon as i put him back in the cage he actually starts yipping and crying  [:(]  I'll keep you guys updated and i'll mention the possible disc problem to him and see what he says, meningitis does make sense because of his high fever and all. Thanks for the advice.

Dyan, yes he's had up to date shots, like for parvo & rabies but i was living in California for awhile and came back down to Florida and didn't get him started on any heartworm meds yet. That's another thing i'm going to mention to the doctor when he calls is heartworm probs, because he said the other day that the worms can mess up the central nervous system.

Keep in mind the high fever can be caused by lots of pain.  That is a very high fever, though.  The tick borne diseases sure come to mind for me, too. There are many more than just Lymes, and they require special tests. Has the fever gone down with pain meds?  If not then its probably not pain related.  Just a thought.

Any news? Could cushings disease be a possibilty?
