    Update on Pookie

i just thought i would post this in the dog section to hopefully get better reponces

i took my 11 yr old cat into the vet on Dec 27, they have diagnosed him with mycoplasma hemofelis and or a possiblity of lipidosis
his chances are 50/50 but he seemed to be a bit more responsive today
he is not eating, he is being force fed
so i was wondering if there is anything homemade i can make him that is very healthy, right now he is just being fed chicken baby food, but he has lost weight and hasnt gone to the bathroom
    so any recovery type food
so any recipe that can be blended and fed thru a syringe would be very helpful
    ty for you help

At this point in time... anything your cat will eat will be helpful, provided its not too salty. I would avoid canned fish, but other than that, just get him eating. I would ask for some canned a/d from the vet. Its extremely palatable and nutrient rich. It smells like canned tuna and I have been tempted to eat it myself many a time...

    Newt,
Ask your vet for valium for the kitty. It usually takes affect quickly in that the kitty gets the munchies and eats something. I know this is not a fix all and may or may not work depending on how sick he is.
    But worth a try.
Another thing you can try is canned tuna, in oil and warm it slightly up to get the smells going and stuff it under his nose in hopes he does eat it. You can also get stuff called Nutri-cal at your vet's. It is a paste high calory stuff to give him something until you can get him to eat. I would just try anything and everything he might like, all his favorite foods. Just don't stop offering anything he might like and if you can warm them up a little to entice him to eat a little.
Keeping him in my prayers and will have a candle lit for him too for a quick speedy recovery.
Nothing like a sick kitty. My heart goes out to you.

    thank you for the replies
so far today no calls from the vet so im assuming thats a good sign
i am making him a broth with chicken, a tiny bit of liver, little garlic and little alfalfa and will add some of the canned food from the vet
and some yoghurt which he loves

I don't have anything to add to what's already been said; just wanted to say I hope he recovers and I'll be sending healing thoughts.

Oooh, I totally forgot about Nutri-cal... thats another excellent suggestion!

Nutri-cal was a big part of my own, rather instinctive feeding solutions for two different cats facing major medical crises. I used it alone and even added a squirt in to tuna and put through food processor to make it more of a baby food consitency and easier to get down.  Both my kitties made it through their health ordeals - hope you and your kitty are also lucky.

I can't think of any other foods to try, but I know that sometimes you can get a cat to eat if you smear some food on their paws. Most cats - even when quite sick - will try to "groom" it off and can get some nutrition that way. It even worked on my dalmation when he had colitis a couple months back!

Don't give him any garlic! It's very poisonous.

I hope your kitty is doing well.  I lost my cat back in the 'Spring.  Pippi was 17 and never sick a day in her life.  Only vet trips was for vax, checkups, etc.  We still miss her.  She was a very special kitty.
