    he's going crazy...

I've read some of the other posts regarding itchiness...i'm gonna try the virbac spray. Kaiser is tearing his skin up from itching so bad! He's got a lot of dandruff right now. I bought some itch stop spray, it doesn't seem to be doing much. Is there anything else i can do to relieve him? i think the dry skin is from being inside all the time...

    what did the vet say?

I sound like a broken record sometimes, but honestly, the Nu Sal T shampoo worked better than anything else I've tried for the itchiness and dandruff.  The other thing I'd suggest is using benadryl for awhile to get the itch/scratch cycle to calm down.  I think once they get going and irritate the skin, they really need something to stop the whole cycle.  You're probably already using fish oil supplements, but if not, definitely start with those too.

I didn't take him to the vet. It's not allergies and he's not normally like this...he's just been like this for like a week and a half. There's probably not much the vet could do

thanks, i'll look up that shampoo. He usually takes fish oil but his eyes were a little runny and i thought it might be the fish oil. I will add some in his supper tonight

I'm not positive, but I don't think the fish oil would cause runny eyes.  Are you certain there's no allergy problems?

he seemed to have some allergy problems when i first got him and fed him purina one...his eyes would swell up and his skin would be very red. I don't think it's allergies this time because he;s not red or anything, just really dry and flaky. He eats evo, so if it IS allergies i wonder if it could be chicken...

ETA: i didn't think fish oil could cause the runny eyes either...i was just trying to eliminate things to find out what it was...His eyes have not been runny lately so i guess it was just that time of year?

I know exactly what you mean about eliminating things if you even suspect they're a cause.  I have the allergy lab from h@!! and one of the signs of her allergies is the goopy eyes.  She's also gone thru real itchy periods, but sometimes that's not a big problem even when she's having trouble with other things (yeasty paws, itchy ears).  Then other times, she's scratching and flaking and has no other problems then that.  I chalk just about everything up to her allergies and so I tend to go down that path when I hear of other dogs being itchy.  Doesn't mean yours is, it's just always worth considering.  Evo's a great food, but if you think it might be an allergy to chicken, it might be worth a switch.

Kaiser's beautiful; looks like a Rhodesian Ridgeback. I'm the one that recommended Virbac spray for dandruff; I use it on Jessie in the winter when she gets dandruff from the low humidity. For itching I agree with Cathy about the shampoo she recommends. Fish oil doesn't keep Jessie from having dry skin but dogs with allergies lose more moisture through their skin; it should help your dog. Kaiser may have pollen allergies; Jessie's eyes used to swell in the spring and summer before she started immunotherapy; was he eating the Purina One at that time of year? Good luck with your dog.

If it is because of the dry time of year you could get a humidifier. I would also use something like Best Shot Ultra Vitalizing Mist. It is a hemectant/leave in condioner. I use it because it replenishes the moisture stipped away from the skin and coat after a bath, it's also an anti-stat and provides UV protection. You don't have to use it after a bath, I use it on brush outs and it helps dry flaky skin/coats. Fish Oil supplements will help too.

Bevo has very dry skin during the winter months as well.  I have found that fish oil helps, but I also use HyLyt Shampoo and bath oil.  Then bath oil mixed with water & is a leave on used after bathing.  I've had good luck controlling his dandruff with this.

jessiesmom, Kaiser's my GSD (in the avatar) but yep, Wyatt is a RR. When his eyes were runny he was eating either canidae or regular innova, i'm not sure which one because i've fed both over the past 2 years. Thank you all so much for your input! i'll try getting some of the shampoo you all suggested and start giving him his fish oil again.

My little male Chihuahua get flakey when he's on EVO and he will sometimes get a few little bumps. I usually only do a one bag rotation of the EVO, then I go backt o EP Anchovy, Sardine, and Salmon. His itchy/flakey's go away after about a week. I tried the TWO Wild & Natural this time, but they just flat out refused it.

I don't know if it's related or not, but just thought I would mention it.

I'm in the same boat with my guy.  He's been itching his face like crazy lately.  There's lots of mention of fish oil supplement that would help.  Is it in pill form or liquid?  Would I give it during feeding times? and lastly where can I buy fish oil supplement?  Thanks for your help

I think fish oil supplements are one of the best and safest supplements we can add.  I take them myself.  You can buy them in any vitamin section of the store.  If you use just fish oil caps (they always comes as gel caps), you need to add vit E caps too though (this is necessary for dogs, but not humans).  I prefer to use something like Derm Caps or 3V caps, or something like that, which has both the vit E and omega 3s.  You can order them from any of the pet supply places online or maybe find them at a local petstore.  My dogs will eat them right out of my hand, so I just put them in with their food each morning.

. He's been itching his face like crazy lately

Itching in the head area ( face, ears) is a symptom of food allergies; if the fish oil doesn't help you may want to try a food with a different ingredients than what he's eating now.
