    Trimeprazine/Prednisone

Does anyone have any info about Trimeprazine (an anthistamine) and Prednisone.  It's both medications in one.  The pills are 2 mg.  I am supposed to give Jake 2 tables 2xday for 4 days, then 2 tablets 1xday for 4 days then 1 tablet a day until gone.  Is this medication safe?  I am so afraid of the steriods.  If he gets more hungry, do I feed him more?

He is trying to get over a paw infection, but will bite at his paw once or twice a day.  He is also taking Cipro for 14 days.

Please, any feedback is appreciated.  I am very nervous about giving him the antihistamine/steriod.

Don't worry! Steroids are only unsafe when taken for a long period. It looks like your vet has Jake on short-term dose that tapers off, which is what is normally recommended. Steriods can cause problems when used long term, but are also very useful and effective when used correctly.

Yep, I totally agree.  You may not even be able to tell a difference in appetite or anything else with a short run like this.  I used the same regimen last spring for Sassy and didn't notice any difference at all.  If Jake does seem hungrier than usual, you could always try adding in something low-calorie, like green beans, just to get you thru.

If you want to be ultra safe give him milk thistle at the same time.  It won't interfere with the meds but it WILL protect the liver and kidneys.

Apparently milk thistle actually is more effective when it's distilled in alcohol so my vet has me use HerbPharm's tincture - Billy takes BOODLES of it because he's had to be on steroids for the IMHA and it has been a marvelous help.

He takes huge doses of it (he takes three full dropperfuls twice a day -- which is 1 1/2 times the adult human dose but the vets are all for it because of this huge steroid load he's on for the IMHA).

But even one dropperful twice a day is gonna be a big help.  It does taste alcoholy but you can mix it in sardines or anything with a strong flavor if he objects.  I get away with TONS of stuff for him with sardines.  He knows it's medicine but HEY MOM that stuff will make ANYTHING taste good!!!

Thanks guys for all your feedback!  I get so stressed when Jake is sick or if I have to change his food etc.  My anxiety is high.  I wish he could just talk and tell me what he wants/needs.  I guess he does in dog ways though!  LOL!  I just want my little guy better!

    Thanks again!

I wouldn't worry about it. We hear so much about the negative effects of steroids that it's easy to forget how beneficial they can be for short term relief.

Wolfgang recently had to take them for three weeks. He did get very, very hungry. Since he's a large dog and not the teensiest bit overweight I just let him have a little extra food until about two weeks after he was done. He gained two pounds, which is not detrimental to him and can now lose it very, very slowly.

    Good luck.
