    Porkchop bones

We had porkchops last night, and this morning we discovered that our 4 1/2 year old Lab (Morris) got into the garbage and ate the bones.  I think he has an upset stomach because he just stands or lays around, although at other times today he was moving around fine.  He also has eaten regularly today, and drinks his water.

Anything I can/should do?  Will he metabolize or pass the bones OK?  Should I take him to the vet?

You might want to take him to the vet tomorrow if he isn't acting 100% himself.  Cooked pork chop bones are very dangerous.  They splinter easily.   Several years ago a lab puppy was brought into my vet and it had eaten a pork chop bone, it splinter, it punctured his stomache and peritonitis set in.  My vet was not able to save him.

Chances are your dog will be just fine.  But if he isn't acting completely himself, better get him to the vet, or at least call and talk to your vet.  Good luck.

Hi and welcome to idog; dogs can digest bones and some members here feed thier dogs raw meaty bones like chicken wings or beef ribs; no one here feeds thier dogs cooked bones because they can splinter when the dog is eating them and cause problems like perforations. I'd say just keep an eye on your dog and take him to the vet if he vomits, paces or whines and acts uncomfortable, refuses to eat or acts lethargic. Don't be surprised if he has some diarrhea; that's normal after eating too much of anything new. Keep us posted and I'll be sending healing thoughts your way. More than likely he'll be fine.

Thanks for the replys.  I will get him to the vet tomorrow if there is a problem.  Right now he seems fine though.

A quick update.  Morris is back to his young self, so it appears that he is going to be fine.  Next time the bones go where he can't get to them.  Thanks for your helpful replies.

That's great to hear.[:)]  It can be hard to keep dogs out of the trash; once Jessie got into the trash and ate some discarded tuna casserole. She had terrible gas [:-]; probably from the cheese sauce. The lid was one of those that swings open; we have a pic of her walking around with the lid hanging from her neck. Shortly afterwards we got a container that has a lid that locks and haven't had anymore problems.

My first irish Setter managed to get the lid off a can i had put old deep fryer oil in and "drank' some of that stuff .  We didn't know it til the next morning when I found a big pool of blood by the back door.  Rushed him right to the vet and he was treated and given drugs for his tummy, but wasn't til i got home i found the lid off the can in the trash...and knew that was what had gotten his insides so messed up.  The vet actually put h im on gainseburgers (are they still aroune?) for over a month.
