    My dog just fell over....help.

I have a 7 year old yorkie/shitzu and he has been .....well for lack of a better word...coughing, kinda like a cat gets hairballs. Well this morning i let him out for a pee and he started that dry coughing again and then just toppled over on the ground.
I called out to him and he stood up and looked at me like nothing had happened. Whats wrong with my puppy?
Should i get him to a vet?

Should I get him to a vet?

    Ummm... YES

Definitely -- coughing can be a sign of heart problems, and particularly if the dog lost consciousness for an instant -- vet pronto!!  Like this morning!

well i took him to the Vet.

They told me he has a small indent on his trachya if thats how you spell it and that the back of his throat looks a little red. He said the dry-heaves could be due to irritation.

As for the passing out, since he got a little shaky and then passed out and then sprung up happy again not more than a minute later the vet thinks it might be epilepsy. That it was a seisure.

    Anyone got any other opinions?

did the vet start treatment or medication for the epilepsy?

no he didn't start any medication. He said he wants to be sure and if it happens again he will start meds.

I will check out that web site thanks

The meds for seizures have SO many side effects usually it's best to not start those until seizures are established and can't be controlled in other ways -- I'd be really upset with a vet who wanted to start a dog on meds just for one *Possible* seizure.  Sure would want to watch it tho.

Agreed, and I live with an epileptic dog. We use NO seizure drugs (never have) and control her seizures with diet, acupuncture, and supplements. Not all seizures can be controlled this way, but it does make a big dent in the number that most have.

what would be some suggestions you would have about diet changes to reduce episodes? I feed him regular IAMS dog food currently.

Did the dog have any movements, or did he just fall over unconscious and get right back up?  If it was the latter, other conditions beside epilepsy can cause it.  Heart block, hypoglycemia, and other stuff.  It's also possible, if he has collapsing trachea, and was exercising at the time, that he simply couldn't get enough air.
