Random panting... and bum licking?

2 questions:

Will a dog pant if they haven't had as much exercise as usual? Scout has been on a bit of home-rest because she hurt her paw the other day. I think she is bored and has pent up energy. She has been panting in the house randomly - not all the time, just here and there. Could it be from being cooped up?

2nd - how often do dogs usually lick their crotch area? It seems like she does it alot... what could cause this? (Her crotch, not bum).

edit: ** Yes she is spayed.

My laymen's take on your issues is: 1) you are probably right that she is a little "pent up" but just make sure it isn't overly warm in the house either; and 2) is she spayed? If she isn't, she may be considering going into an estres. Just my thoughts and I am sure you will find much more knowledgeable advice here.

In my experience, and I have two females, not all that often unless there's a problem. My first guess would be a yeast infection and the second would be a UTI. Do you see any redness around the area? Any problems urinating? If the licking has increased from her usual behavior, I'd get her into the vet to rule out either of those things. If it's typical behavior, maybe it's just natural for her.

As for the panting - again, based on my experience, unless my dogs are either out in the sun/heat or have been really active, they don't pant. So again, if this isn't typical for her, I'd keep an eye on it. Hopefully it's just pent up energy and once the paw heals, she can get back to burning some of that off.
