    need some advice

my 4 year old beagal Dexter keeps itching his neck area until the hair is gone and it is just skin. then the hair starts to grow back and he starts itching again until the new hair is gone. i dont see any bumps or anything out of the ordinary and the vet says he doesnt have fleas so i dont know what is causing this ill try to post a pic but i dont think the quality is too good. anyone have any advice on what the problem is or anything that will help heal up then area?

Is he itching anywhere else?  Has the dog been treated for mange?  That can be very itchy, and many times vets will treat for mange before ruling it out . . . . its an easy treatment.

Is it possible his collar is bothering him?  Has he by chance worn a flea collar ?  I understand that sometimes they really irritate a dog's neck.  Whatever, i wish you luck

no i have not seen him itching anywhere else, however i have noticed that since the weather has gotten colder that he has more dandruff on his coat back by his tail where the hair is the thickest. what exactly is mange and the symtoms when i brought him to the vet a month and a half ago all was good and thats when i was told he was flea free

the only time he wears a collar is when we go somewhere or he goes on walked otherwise he is promarily an indoor dog. for flea control i dont not use collars because i have read studies and cases where it has caused health issues but thanks for the input

Try doing a google search for 'Sarcoptic Mange'.  It will give you a lot of information on symptoms and treatments . . . . the formal test for sarcoptic mange is a skin scraping at the vet, but as you'll read, they are only able to catch it 50% of the time even if the dog has it.  As a result, its common for vets to simply treat for mange without a formal diagnostic test other than description and symptom presentation.

Winston had a lot of the symptoms you are describing (albeit not as bad).  He itched and nibbled at his tail, ears, armpits, belly, and elbows.  I also noticed a significant increase in dander.  We took him to the vet and he prescribed 4 bi-weekly treatments of revolution (the common flea control medication).  We gave the first dose at the vet and within one week, he's itching considerably less and its getting better every day.  I'd really look into it and ask the vet if he thinks it may be a possibility . . . . its worth a shot.  Worst case scenario, you give him the treatment and he doesn't get better . . . but he'll be protected from fleas and heartworm, and you'll have more information about where to go next.

I wish you luck!  I know how frustrating it is to watch your dog itch and itch and itch and you feel so helpless . . . just hang in there!

looks like their is a medicine out there called Ivermectin which your revolution has a small amount of it in. i see you can buy this on vetamerica so i think i might try it out.. it looks like it kills any blood bound parasites depending on the dose you give. ill let you know how it goes

That does NOT look like Mange at all. I would be very hesitant about using any treatment for mange for what your dog has. This is not the typical "mange" look. Mange normally starts on the ear tips, belly, inner thighs, feet, face, etc. It's crusty and can smell yeasty.

Just out of curiousity, are you using a topical flea treatment (spot-on)? It really looks more like a sensitivity to me.

    GAH!
PLEASE be careful about dosing Ivermectin on your own!
Yes, A LOT of people do dose it on their own, but it's NOT something to mess around with. Be VERY careful reading dosing instructions and PLEASE consult either your vet OR someone who has done it before on their own.
