    Got Bogey's test results ! ! !

Well, we finally got Bogey's allergy results today - she's allergic to pretty much everything ! Environmental allergies are: Ragweed, russian thistle, sage, lamb's quarter, yellow dock, cottonwood, walnut, oak, sweet vernal grass, june grass, human dander, sheep wool, mites, molds, fleas and houseflys. So, she's pretty much allergic to something year round. Food allergies are: corn, beef, milk, turkey and lamb. The ironic thing is, we sort of thought corn, but we're feeding her lamb and rice, and every morning when I'm done with my cereal, I let her drink the rest of the milk in my bowl. So, the vet is waiting to hear tomorrow or the next day about the syrum for her shots and then we start with the injections and different food.  We are so relieved since there's an end in sight to her being miserable. It was well worth the money spent on the tests. Thanks for all your well-wishes !

That is great news; the change in diet will help a lot; this time of year where you live the outdoor allergies won't be a problem so her itching at the moment is being caused by her food allergies and indoor allergies. Let us know when she starts her shots; I sure hope she feels better soon.

Well you on your way to recovery then!
    Good luck...keep us posted!

You two are great.  Thanks so much for your posts. Yeah, I was figuring a big part of her itching was due to food. So, we'll see.  Are either of your babie's doing the shots? And what food are you using? The results on the tests is suggesting Wellness Venison, Hill's d/d, Royal Canin -Hypoallergenic PH 19 and Purina, LA-Formula, Nature's Recipe-Chicken Meal, Rice & Barley and Naure's Recipe - Vegetarian.  Any thoughts?

Gosh i am sooo glad that you got the test results back and now aren't playing the guessing game![;)]

I couldn't believe that he is allergic to "human dander" [:o]

What a list!  When I was a teen I had a friend whose little brother was allergic to everthing but the kitchen sink...and would probably allergic to that if they could have tested him for it.  My youngest son was allergic to bee & wasp stings and took a weekly shot for a year and then no more problems.  Hopefully you baby will respond to the "antidote" and problems will ease up and better still, end.

Jessie's been doing the shots for about 17 months and they've really helped, but they're not a cure all; she still needs an antihistamine from about June to October. She had some flare ups that I posted about four weeks ago but she's much better now and they weren't nearly as bad as before she started her shots. My vet said that many of his allergy dogs were " going crazy" at that time. Bogey will probably need to be retested from time to time, as will Jessie; thier allergies can change and a serum with different allergens may be needed. Please take the results for the food with a grain of salt; my derm vet doesn't think the blood tests for food allergies are reliable and she's been practicing for more than 20 years and is an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Purdue University. We know through an elimination diet that Jessie's allergic to chicken so I rotate the Eagle Pack Holistic Duck, Lamb, and Fish. She also gets cooked beef, turkey, fish, or pork added to her food daily, or has canned EVO, Eagle Pack, Merrick, and Nature's Variety foods added to her kibble. I should get the recipe booklets I ordered from Monoca Segal within the next few days; Jessie is going to get home cooked meals for dinner. ;Please don't feed Bogey a vegetarian food unless you have to; dogs truly need a meat based diet to thrive, especially dogs with an immune system stressed by allergies.

Jenny - I'm so glad you finally got some answers.  I know what a relief it is, even if it does mean wanting to put your dog in a plastic bubble [:)].  I use the Natural Balance Duck & Potato, so you might consider that.  The other Natural Balance Allergen Formulas should work also.

My Bubblegum is okay with allergies, but my sons Ollie is the Dane that was taking the allergy shots. He was allergic to dust and grass. He no longer takes the shots, he is fine.  He eats Eagle Pack Natural...is doing great on it.  He also get HUMAN food added to his kibble.

Thanks everybody for your thoughts. We'll wait now until the vet calls with the shots ready. He's still waiting to hear back from the place that tested her with the correct serum. The one thing that she isn't allergic to is duck but I did give her duck once not too long ago and within about 5 min. her tummy, and ears were bright red and itchy. So, whatever happened there - I don't know, but I do know I won't be giving her duck. Vet said she might not be allergic to it, but it's just too rich for her and that's how it manifested.

So glad you got the testing. You got the skin test? They come back immedietly. My derm. vet gave the skin testing and had Trudy's vial of serum ready so fast. Right away at the visit. She got her first shot then. I have given the rest, for two years. Really has been a wonderful blessing!!!!!

I hope the shots help. They have Trudy feeling WONDERFUL. Itching is gone.

Jenny, have you tried Natural Balance Fish? Trudy does SO well on it. No grain. I wouldn't use a vegetarian food. I feed the kibble and canned

Thanks for the reply. How much did the shots cost you? My vet wasn't able to tell me as he didn't know when we talked what all was going to bein the serum.  I did try Natural Balance before and she liked it. One of the options that is offered for Bogey is NB Fish.  They list about 10 that she can have that don't have anything in them that she would be allergic to. When we meet with the vet I"m going to try whatever he suggests first. She'll eat pretty much anything as long as I can mix a little canned with it. I've heard others say not to use the vegetarian, either, unless she absolutely cannot have any meats. Thanks again.  Did you notice a change right away after her first shot?

Many vets like to suggest Science Diet Ultra Allergen z/d because it's the easiest solution for them, but it's only 14% protein and has ethoxyquin, which is a chemical preservative that is banned from human food. It also costs $20.00 for an eight pound bag.
I can tell you what Jessie's allergy serum costs; $165.00 and that's more than a six months supply, but the place where I take her, Purdue University Small Animal Hospital, has a technician that makes it there so you may have to pay more. I used to do her shots myself and it's prettty easy but she started yelping after about six weeks so I started taking her to the vet for them. She still yelps but it's a lot easier on my nerves when they're doing the shots and they only charge $5.00, and they also keep the serum at the clinic. I was told it can take 3 months to a year to see results but Jessie responded almost immediately and was doing much better after eight weeks.

The Derm. knew what needed to be in the serum right away. He made up the serum right after the skin test.

I can't remember the cost of each vial. About $130 I think. Her pills are $45 a bottle. The shots took a couple of months to really work. I can't believe how well it did work. She has had a shot per week for two years. It is easy and she doesn't seem to even notice it! She gets a  treat and praise after each shot.

I did notice Trudy did great on the Hydroxyzine. Other antihistmines didn't work for her at all.

I give Trudy kibble and a bit of canned. I put her pill in the canned and she gobbles it all up. I am really thankful I finally went to my Dermatologist. I can call them anytime. I did a LOT at first.

Trudy feels so good and is all better.
