Lips

    Lips

Rupert has had this on his lips since he was a pup. I had asked the vet about it when he was a puppy, and the vet said it was probably from chewing. I believed him at first, but it never went away. Do you think it is some kind of fungus? Could it be related to his irritated paws?

Hmmm, it sure is symetrical. I would tend to think it's from something like an allergy to his bowl or something. As it seems to be where it comes in contact possibly or rests on an object (floor maybe?). It just seems so perfectly matched up on each side and the area it covers. If you say that his paws are irritated, then I do think there may be some type of allergen or irritant he's either eating or coming in contact with.
It may be two separate issues but related to immune function.

Does it get weepy and/or bleed at times?  Sassy had really bad problems like that but mostly on her chin.  If she put her head down on the sidewalk, she'd make it bleed.  Someone suggested switching to stainless steel bowls and it cleared right up.  If you're using plastic, I'd try that first.  If not, I'm not sure what it might be but maybe further testing by the vet is in order.

He has stainless bowls both in the kitchen and his kennel. The floor of his kennel is plastic, but his bed covers about 80% of it, and he's smaller than his bed.

We have carpet in most of our house, just linoleum (sp) in the kitchen. He never lays down in there.

It never weeps or bleeds, or cracks open.

Gosh - I don't know then.  Sassy's lips are about the same as Rupert's (long, floppy) and if it's from chewing, I'd think she'd have the same issue.  The pictures you took are really good, so hopefully someone will be along who's seen this before.

[sm=biggrin.gif] It's not like chewing is rare for a dog.
He's got a vet appointment on Thursday for his annual heartworm test, so I'll ask again.

How's your dog?  My dog gets this around the corner of his lips if I change his food to Eagle Pack...every time I try out this food (different varieties)  his face gets oozy, hair loss, and red...the minute I take him off of it, he heals up..there's something in /eagle that doesn't agree with him..mine does great on Chicken soup.  Maybe you can try a different food (Solid gold or Innova?) and see if he doesn't clear up... Just a thought.
