    Reaction to Rabies Shot

Casie has a rather large spot on her leg. It's circular and about 3 inches. The hair is gone. I took her to the vet and she thinks this is a reaction to her rabies shot. They did scrape the area and are checking to make sure its not fungal. But she seems to be sure its from the shot. The vet said the hair will most likely never grow back, and it could develop into a tumor that will need surgery to remove. I am freaking out here, between Mattie being scared of me, and now this with Casie!!!

Has anyone had experience with rabies reactions? I will try to get a picture of her leg.

How long ago was the shot?  My holistic vet told me to do a few things:

    1.  My dog developed a firm 'lump' bigger than the length of your thumb where his was -- (it was longer than wide -- almost the path that the injection would have taken) -- but she told me to 'pluck' at it - literally to pick up the area gently but firmly between my thumb and forefinger and let the flesh 'snap back' -- this circulates the blood to the area and helps the body deal with that area and heal.  It DID resolve eventually -- and the spot went away after a few months.  Don't do this until the dog objects -- Just a couple of 'plucks' when you see it - daily if possible.  Not meant to hurt at all -- simply to encourage circulation in the area.

    2.  Thuja -- it's a homeopathic.  Give 3-4 pellets (and you don't need the 'higher dose' thuja, but either will work) daily for a week -- and then you can repeat in a month or 6 weeks if you need to. Thuja is good for vaccine reactions and for after vaccines generally -- it's also used specifically to deal with tumors, warts, etc.

If you have never used homeopathics -- I can tell you how, but don't touch them -- they are designed to dissolve IN THE MOUTH.  (sweet and not at all unpleasant).  Typically I will tap the pellets onto a folded piece of paper - then fold and crush them with the edge of something hard - even a hammer.  Then pour the dust into the dog's mouth.

Every homeopathic company (Boiron, Hylands and others) have a different 'dispenser' and they can be kinda funky because they are typically designed (particularly Boiron and a couple of others) to dispense these pellets straight into your mouth without 'touching' them.  So don't give up -- despite what it feels like they weren't designed to mystify humans!!

Not expensive, and not a 'medicine' -- a homeopathic can be a really incredible help.  It simply stimulates the body to deal with that 'thing' -- it won't medicate a symtpom.  If you want to read more about homeopathics in general try [linkhttp://www.boiron.com]http://www.boiron.com[/link] or [linkhttp://www.hylands.com]http://www.hylands.com[/link] or [linkhttp://www.abchomeopathy.com]http://www.abchomeopathy.com[/link] .

I wouldn't freak out-- I'm glad your vet took it seriously, but if you can get the body to deal with the vaccine, you shouldn't have problems with it.  Rabies shots are part of 'life' -- and next time have the vet NOT give it in muscle.  We have to have them to license our dogs -- but find out what you can do in your state to get them to not require the shots annually if they do now.  A LOT of states are changing their llaws.

My vet says he sees more reactions ro rabies than any other vax.  My 6 1/2 year old golden, KayCee, had a severe reactions to her annual set of vax 4 years ago.  No problem with puppy shots or first round of annuals, but almost lost her to the 2ed set.  My vet feels it was was the lepto part of the vax, but he doesn't like to take a chance, so she only gets rabies every year now as law required.  However, lat year there was an outbreak of distempr in this area and we did give her the distmper only.
