How long ago was the shot? My holistic vet told me to do a few things:
1. My dog developed a firm 'lump' bigger than the length of your thumb where his was -- (it was longer than wide -- almost the path that the injection would have taken) -- but she told me to 'pluck' at it - literally to pick up the area gently but firmly between my thumb and forefinger and let the flesh 'snap back' -- this circulates the blood to the area and helps the body deal with that area and heal. It DID resolve eventually -- and the spot went away after a few months. Don't do this until the dog objects -- Just a couple of 'plucks' when you see it - daily if possible. Not meant to hurt at all -- simply to encourage circulation in the area.
2. Thuja -- it's a homeopathic. Give 3-4 pellets (and you don't need the 'higher dose' thuja, but either will work) daily for a week -- and then you can repeat in a month or 6 weeks if you need to. Thuja is good for vaccine reactions and for after vaccines generally -- it's also used specifically to deal with tumors, warts, etc.
If you have never used homeopathics -- I can tell you how, but don't touch them -- they are designed to dissolve IN THE MOUTH. (sweet and not at all unpleasant). Typically I will tap the pellets onto a folded piece of paper - then fold and crush them with the edge of something hard - even a hammer. Then pour the dust into the dog's mouth.
Every homeopathic company (Boiron, Hylands and others) have a different 'dispenser' and they can be kinda funky because they are typically designed (particularly Boiron and a couple of others) to dispense these pellets straight into your mouth without 'touching' them. So don't give up -- despite what it feels like they weren't designed to mystify humans!!
Not expensive, and not a 'medicine' -- a homeopathic can be a really incredible help. It simply stimulates the body to deal with that 'thing' -- it won't medicate a symtpom. If you want to read more about homeopathics in general try [link

I wouldn't freak out-- I'm glad your vet took it seriously, but if you can get the body to deal with the vaccine, you shouldn't have problems with it. Rabies shots are part of 'life' -- and next time have the vet NOT give it in muscle. We have to have them to license our dogs -- but find out what you can do in your state to get them to not require the shots annually if they do now. A LOT of states are changing their llaws.
