    Prozac for Dogs

I have a male Maltese who is almost 5 years old.  For the past two years, we have been battling a problem with paw licking and chewing.  Last summer, Snowball mutilated his paws so badly that the vet had to remove two dangling nails from his paws.  We changed his food, tried Atopica, over-the-counter allergy medications, and are now trying anti-depressants.  We first tried Amitriptyline, but he had side effects too serious for him to continue the medication.  Today I started Prozac.  This is our last hope.  Has anyone else tried this medication for their dog?  What were your results?  If this doesn't work, we will have to put our baby to sleep.

Have you had allergy tests done?  There could have been one common ingredient in the food you changed to that no one would have thought of.  I would suggest the allergy test.

You were on another thread, too, with this problem.  Please, stop treating your lawn with fertilizer, or anything else.  Have the dog allergy tested.  Sometimes, inhalant allergies, contact allergies, or (less frequently) food allergies are the culprit.  If you get the dog tested, you will probably find the cause.  Don't give up - you may be putting a dog to sleep needlessly over an easily corrected problem!!!!!

Also, didn't you say that you have been living in the home for two years?  Is his condition coincidental with your moving there??
It isn't that common for a dog to suddenly start mutilating himself if there is no environmental cause.  Instead of trying to get away cheap with over the counter stuff, wouldn't it make more sense to test him medically for allergies, and address them correctly?  You might want to try visiting this site for help with ingredient lists to help you fight possible food allergies: www.mordanna.com.  Click on the Dog Food Project.
