Fleas - please help!

    Fleas - please help!

I took my 8-month-old Bichon to a groomer today, and the groomer said she had found fleas when she was giving my dog a bath. I was kind of in shock.... My puppy has been on Revolution, and I have never seen her scratching more than usual.

I take my puppy to the park nearby and let her play with her playmates every day. We spend 30-45 minutes in the morning and 1-2 hours in the evening at the park. I assume she got fleas from her playmate(s)....., but I do want her to have fun, so I do not want to stop taking her to there.

    My questions are:

    - The groomer said she would use special shampoo on my dog. Is it enough for now? Is the anything more I have do for flea control?

    - Is there any way I can do myself to repel fleas (and ticks) daily?  Does daily brushing work for this problem? I brush my dog once in every other day....

    - Is it OK as long as my dog is on Revolution?  No further treatment needed? Should I give my dog a bath with special shampoo for pest control more often?  How often?

    - Should I not have my dog on the couch/bed? I think it is very difficult to stop her from going on them though....

    - I have heard about a product to repel fleas/ticks that is called CatanDog's. Does anyone know anything about this product? Does this really work?

She is my first dog, and I have just encountered this problem.... for the first time... I am sorry to have asked many silly questions.., but I am freaked out to have heard about my dog having fleas... I will keep obtaining more info. about ;pest control by myself, but if someone could answer these questions above, that would be very much appreciated!!!!!

Thank you so much for your help.

I wouldn't use Revolution if you GAVE it to me.  The ONE year we did use it we had the worst flea infestation that I've ever had..and that's in over 30 years of dog ownership.  I had to additionally buy Frontline to keep the darned things at bay.  And, that fact (Revolution didn't do the job it is supposed to do on the stuff I CAN see) led me to wonder if it was doing a job on HW or anything else that I couldn't see.

Special shampoos are not needed.  ANY shampoo will work, but you have to leave it lathered up for 5-10 minutes..and all over so the fleas don't have a safe place to run to....when you rinse the fleas will be stunned and sluggish and you'll need to use a fingernail to POP them...you need to hear the crunch.

I'd add Frontline to control the fleas and switch to heartguard plus for her hw protection.

Revolution doesn't work very well for flea control because the fleas have to BITE the dog to die.  It's a pesticide that lives in the body all the time -- when you put the spot 'on' it sinks thru the skin and goes to the bloodstream and fleas/ticks have to bite the dog to be killed.  Personally, I don't like Revolution because it's 'systemic' -- it stays in the bloodstream all month and you simply 'hope' it's dissipated from the body before you put on another dose.

If I were to put it in other words I'd say exactly the same thing Glenda just said.  I hate the fact that Revolution is systemic.  HeartGuard is a fine thing to use for heartworm prevention altho I prefer the Interceptor because it does more, but is safer for more breeds.  Where I am there is a LOT of trouble with parasites generally (like hooks, whips, etc.) and so the Interceptor is better for us because it deals with a wider spectrum of parasites but does it without increasing risk to my dogs.

I use Frontline because it stays in the hair follicles and skin pores and doesn't go into the body system.  Advantage crystalizes on the surface and that doesn't go into the body either -- both of those kill "on contact" meaning the flea doesn't have to bite the dog to die.  That's a good thing in my book.

That does mean you need to do heartworm protection separately and I use Interceptor for that.  But again, it only stays in the body ONE day and then the chemical is gone, rather than Revolution's constant presence in the body (and they're finding it's not all that satisfactory for heartworm prevention either).

For me, even in Florida -- flea-capital of the known universe (except for Texas maybe) the Frontline and Interceptor work very well.  When the fleas are super bad, I might use Frontline spray so I can control the dose a bit better.

You can try flea-combing daily -- but it's very difficult and YOU have to kill those fleas (usually drop them into a dish of a strong solution of dishsoap & water).  That can be difficult.

There are herbal sprays available, as well as simple solutions of home remedies (I've used a spoonful of Skin So Soft bath oil in a cup of water and a cup of alcohol in a spray bottle and there are lots of other ones) that you can spray on the dog's legs/belly before you take them out to make them less attractive to fleas.  There are some essential oils that fleas just don't like.  You might use the search engine listed above to search the forum and see what others have done for fleas.

The occasional flea happens and you just have to be vigilant.  And it can be a tough decision as to what chemicals you do want the dog exposed to.  You'll find lively discussions on here all the time about what everyone uses.

I allow my dogs on the furniture **by invitation only** -- in other words they don't have the 'right' to just get on any old time, but I allow it and enjoy the company.  Fleas            can lay eggs in your carpet tho -- which is why it's important to use something like Frontline for control.

As far as the bathing goes -- like Glenda says any shampoo is fine.  Even so-called "flea shampoos" really only STUN the fleas -- they don't kill.  What she said about having to actually 'pop' a flea to kill it is true.  If I'm brushing I usually just drop them into very soapy water (literally thick with soap) to keep them stunned until I can flush it down the toilet.  Additionally after a bath I usually use a 'rinse' of water and tea tree oil (literally 2 gallons of plain water that I add about 25 drops of tea tree oil to and then pour over the dog by the cupfulls until it goes down the drain).  It's a good coat conditioner that doesn't build up and fleas seem to hate tea tree oil.

Great advice.  My vet doesn't even carry Revolution any more as a number of his clients dogs came down with heartworms while on it.  I have read many posts on various forums where people use it AND Frontline to control fleas/ticks.  To me that is "double dosing"  flea killer and could be dangerous for some dogs in poor health.

But whatever you do NEVER use any injection heartworm preventative.  Back in about 2001 a  6 month injectable was introduced and it was suppose to be just the "bestest, safest, most convient" thing ever invented.  Only thing--it killed dogs.  My golden retriever, Hunter---who would have been 7 years old today-- died of AIHA and liver damage on Oct. 16, 2003, and on Sept. 3, 2004, it was pulled from the market at the FDA "request" be cause they were getting to many reports of adverse reactions and deaths.  They want to either bring it back, or introduce the 12 MONTH version used (and killing dogs) in Australia.  Am posting a picture of my beloved boy.

    Hi,

I live in Houston where  I think the fleas surpass the human population. [:'(]

I use Advantage, because Romeo had a bad reaction to Frontline ( my dog is a little on the strange side) I try to stay away from chemicals, but this year the fleas are ridiculous.

To his food I add 10 drops of  "Flea Fighter" is made by Animal Botanicals [linkhttp://www.crystalgardenherbs.com]www.crystalgardenherbs.com[/link] is all natural, it makes his blood bitter or you can use organic vinegar on his water.  The ingredients are: extracts of garlic, pennyroyal, wormwood, yellow dock, alfalfa, nettles, and Kelp with flower essences.

For my house and car I use "Fleabusters" you can find at [linkhttp://www.fleabusters.com]www.fleabusters.com[/link] is borate powder so it kills the fleas physically by drying them from the inside out not chemically.  In some states the company will come and apply for you, unfortunately not in Texas.  Is a pain in the rear to apply, but is well worth it and it lasts a year.

For his shampoo I use Dr.  Bonner's Tea Tree Oil Shampoo ( I dilute it because is very strong) you can find at a health food store.  I pay 6.00 for the 8 oz bottle which will last you forever ( you have to dilute because is strong).

And whenever we come from outside I lay him down and do a once over with a flea comb, our first months together I would find them on him as he got healthier they left him alone, I still don't take my chances though as he is allergic to flea saliva.

    Dear glenmar:

Thank you for your response.  I blindly believed Revolution would work for flea/tick control as well as heartworm. I've met so many people in the park I take my dog to, and they ALL apply Revolution to their dogs - well, of course, many of them go to the same animal hospital as me.... I will learn more about Frontline and consider adding it for flea control.

I had to pay extra $15 CAD for the special shampoo to the groomer!! I will spend more time lathering shampoo up on my dog from now on...

Thank you for the good tips to control fleas. They will help!!

    Thanks again, glenmar!

You're welcome.  And please call me Glenda.

When I first got my two older shepherds I still had an older cocker.  I had never heard of Revolution but the vet put her on that.  When I took the pups in, she wanted to do the six month shot (thank the Good Lord I'm too forgetful to have dogs on different stuff, since PH6 KILLS dogs), but I opted for the SAME stuff that Misty had.  I figured that with the SHOT I'd still have to add Frontline and I'm really forgetful and it's just flat easier for me to have everyone all on the same stuff and the same schedule.

I think that many vets like that it is basically an all in one product and honestly believe that it will help owners not forget important stuff.  On paper it sounds good, but in practice it isn't so great.  Callie makes an excellent point as well...Revolution STAYS in their systems for the whole month and HOPEFULLY is gone by the time you need to apply more.  That's a ton of chemicals we are putting INTO their systems when there are other, better options.

    Dear calliecritturs:

Thank you for all your time to respond to my posting. Your reply is really helpful as well as Glenda's (glenmar)... I printed out all the replies I got here so I can read them over and over again. I should have known much more about the medicine I applied to my dog.... Thanks to you, I now understand much better how Revolution/Frontline works.  I live in Toronto, Canada, and Revolution seems very common here, or at least in my neighborhood... I've met so many people in the park nearby, but I've never met anyone who gives Frontline to his/her dog so far... I will ask around to get info. about those products. I am not sure, but my vet may not carry Frontline... I need to ask her..

I will definitely try the home remedies!  I also want to try the tea tree oil. I've heard about the tea tree oil thing, but I never paid attention to it.

Thank you so much again for all your time and information for me. That's fantastic, and it is very kind of you... The most important thing I have learned is that I should always know/understand what exactly I am doing for my dog or giving her...

    Hi sandra_slayton,

Ooh, I am very sorry to hear about Hunter.... He was such a beautiful Golden.... I will always keep your important comment in mind.

Your Hunter is waiting for you at the rainbow bridge...  I can't help crying whenever I think about dogs waiting for their owners at the bridge....

    Thank you again.

    Dear Elizabeth,

Frontline seems really good... I should consider trying it. I am now thinking about spraying something on my dog every time I take her to the park...- something I can apply to her every day... something safe and effective...

Jake is such a gorgeous dog!!!!  Beautiful!

    Thank you , marty-ga!

Even though dogs are less susceptible to tea tree oil toxicosis than cats, I now know I should use it for my dog carefully. It is very good to know.  Since I am thinking about using tea tree oil, this is very importmant!

    Hi  olinda

I definitely will check out "Flea Fighter" and Dr. Bonner's Tea Tree Oil Shampoo!!! I went to [linkhttp://www.crystalgardenherbs.com]www.crystalgardenherbs.com[/link], and found out they have so many products for animals!!  I will read the website closely, and consider trying some products!

    Thanks, olinda!

    Thank again Grenda.

My vet highly recommended Revolution, and I blindly believed in her words. She also highly recommends Science Diet, but since I did lots of search on dog food and now know it is not a good product, so I don't simply trust her words. I've realized how important it is for me to stay knowledgeable on everything about dogs!  You guys are just so informative, and very kind to try to help out. I am very impressed and moved!!
