A Little Hacking

    A Little Hacking

Hello all in the forum I have a question I was hoping someone could help me with.

My 5 month old basset hound “Sammy” who we got 2 and 1/2 weeks ago seems to be hacking as if she has an excess of flem in her throat. Its very middle and there is a lot of time between hacks (hours) and then there is only one or two. She is eating normal and is at a normal activity level. I would not even be asking this question had I not had another puppy (a now 2 year old cocker spaniel) almost die when she was a puppy from kennel cough. I would like to think she is only hacking because she has some grass in her throat or something similar like the fuss form her toys, the dog loves to eat things – I don#%92t need a lawn mower any more :).

I have read that kennel cough has an incubation period of about a week, we got Sammy 2 and 1/2 weeks ago, but she was at the vet for a once over and shots about a week and 1/2 ago. The only other dog she has come in contact with is the cocker spaniel I mentioned early and the cocker spaniel has not come in contact with any other dogs in a long time other then Sammy.

We have a follow up visit at the vet not this coming week end but next (10 days form now)

Should I be worried and bring her to the vet now? Or should I just wait to see what happens.

With the cocker spaniel who almost died from kennel cough we had taken her to the vet the day before she was showing outward symptoms of her illness and the vet said she was happy and healthy. The next morning she started hacking and coughing mildly and by the night was really sick, the next morning after that we took her to another vet and they put her on antibiotics and kept her for 3 days of observations. They told us she was very sick, more sick then the average dog who comes in with kennel cough and where amazed that the first vet didn#%92t notice this when listening to he lungs even if she was not coughing at that time.

    Thank you for your help.

Monitor what she eats as far as things in the yard and toy fuzz.  Keep an eye on her and if other symptoms come around go to the vet.  You can keep tabs on her temperature, should be 100.5-102.5, rectally with any human thermometer.  I would say just watch close and take her in if she seems sick.  If everything looks fine but the hacking continues call the vet and explain it all to them and how long its been going on and see what they say.  Good luck.

We took Sammy to the Vet on Saturday for a rash she was having and the above hacking problem. The Vet said she had so mucus blockage in her airways but saw no problems with her lungs. She said that it may be Kennel cough and gave us some antibiotics to give her. Will see if they work.

I have read that Kennel cough takes about a week to incubate, so if that#%92s what it is I bet Sammy got the cold when at the fist Veterinary I took her to.

I switched Veterinaries because the fist one seemed uninstructed while he was examining  Sammy,  the woman we went to on Saturday seemed very nice and enthusiastic she also did a lot more things while she did a regular check-up on Sammy then the first Vet did.
