    Tell me about Temaril P

    hey guys,
Daisy went in to check her skin last week, (she's been scratching and itching like crazy- spring means allergy season for both her and me!

The vet perscribed Temaril-P. I told her I was not very comfortable with putting her on straight prednisone. She says that this drug (Temaril) is a mixture of a cortico-steriod as well as antihistimine. She says that it works to calm down the immune system (like Pred does) but it also does not give the symptoms that pred does (like polyuria/polydypsia and pred. aggression) becauase it also has an anihistimine in it as well.

I absolutely love my vet- she calls her practice a "semi-conventional" clinic. She does some holisitcs and some regular practice things. She sells Natura Products, and thinks Solid Gold, Timberwolf, and Natural Balance are the best foods around. She does 3 year parvo/distemper vaccines until age 5- then no more at all for life. I had to take Daisy to one of the vets at school when she was itchy again,  and the vet there wanted to push and push the prednisone first. (I didn't let her)

She also has a urinary infection as well and she's taking antibiotics for it. She usually gets probiotics, but I don't know what the ratio/times are with the probiotics to antibiotics. I've heard anything from 2 hours after the antibiotic to after the antibiotics are done to put her on a course of probiotics.

    Any ideas/help??

Sorry I don't have any help for you.Ollie was on it a couple of years ago, don't even remember why except that was when he was knee deep in skin and allergy problems.  I know if we would have had any bad things happen on it, I would have remembered that, but as it is, I can't remember if I thought it was great either.

Hi Laura - I hadn't heard of this before and since I seem to have the biggest allergy problem dog right now, I did a google search on it and found this.

It looks interesting, but it does still have prednisone in it, so the cautions still apply (i.e. long term use, discontinuing gradually, etc.).  I just had Sassy on prednisone for the first time ever and couldn't tell a bit of difference (for the better or worse).  I'm not sure if that's a good sign for us or not, but it was surprising.  Let us know how Daisy does on this.  I'd love to find something new we could try.

Hi Laura. Trudy took that for a while before she was allergy tested. My vet said it is fine for short term use. Probably fine for springtime if that is your only season that is bad. It really helps.Just find the smallest amount you can get away with. Maybe once you feels she is better, you could start just to give her a good antihistamine. See how it goes. Hope she feels better!!! Sally
