Wait,,,,,,,,,,what kind of heartworm treatment?   Heartworm medication? Or did he have heartworm that he was treated for?
If it was heartworm medication, what kind do you use?
    • Gold Top Dog
    no he had  heartworms

How long ago was he treated and how soon after did the lump appear? How big is the lump?

Did the vet say EXACTLY what the lump is?  I would sure ask!

When we adopted Honey 3 years ago last Dec. she also had heart worms and we had her treated.  She was given two injections 24 hours apart.  But they were up on her back, or hips I guess you coud say, just about 2" from the pine on ech side.

If your dog received the same injectins, I would not see how he would develope a lump on his side.

I thought I had read a few times that people claimed their dogs had bumps on their side or leg from rabies shots,,or vaccinations not sure which.

Often there IS a bump at the injection site, which is usually the top of the hip Dyan.

i am  taking him to the vet

Let us know what the vet says!

I think I am confused?  Your dog has a lump and your vet just said it was from the heartworm treatment based on where it was?  I am afraid I don't understand?  Did they aspirate it and there was soomething in it that would suggest it was the Heartworm treatment?
Vaccines I could see because they are injected under the skin (SQ) but I was under the impression that the Heartworm injections were in the muscle (IM) and from what I read an abcess can form but that can be taken care of with a warm compress.  The epaxial muscle that it is injected in is right along the spine between the end of the ribs and the pelvic bone.  It's not really one the side of the animal.  Here's a link I found that mentions that some dogs do have a perminant lump at the injection site.  Take a look!

    Good luck!

Yep, the lump being on the side is what I didn't understand as Honey's heartworm treatment injections were on her back near her hip bones.  She had her rabies vax last week and it was actually given on her side instead of her neck or shoulder.  I think my vet  is now using different sites each year (city law says they have to have rabies every year)

they said because he had  the vaccinations  and the heartworm  treat so close together that it caused the lump  but they said that the vet that treated  him wrong and that  is where  the treatment was injected  but they said it was nothing to worrie about but i am watching him close but he has had it  for a while and seems to be perfectly fine
