Lump in mouth??? I'm SO worried!!

    Pat B is right -- that should have been the FIRST thing I said -- prayers and good thots ARE coming your way from me.  That's another of those things that truly does make us feel better!  And it's surely something we can all "do" to help all of us.

         I'll be thinking of Slick and sending healing thoughts too. Good luck tomorow.

    Hoping for the best for you!!

    Oh goodness, I hope he's ok. I'm sorry I've got no advice to offer, never been through something like that. Let us know how he is!!!

    That looks pretty much like Bubblegums face, I should have looked thru  the archives to find the pictures of her that I put up last year,,but haven't had a chance.    BUT I think the clue to the fact that it is a abcess is his breath.  My sons GF has a Chi that just had to have a tooth removed because it was infected..she is about 9 month old,,but her breath was TERRIBLE.   Your going to take him today, so soon you will know. Please keep us posted.

    Well, we're back from the Vet! Unfortunately, she doesn't know what it is. She was able to confirm that it's not an abcessed tooth as both his tooth and gum are fine. She also confirmed that it has no roots as it moves very easily within the cheek tissue. She tried to aspirate it but NOTHING came out. Ugh. So, she put him on antibiotics and gave me two options: watch and wait, see if it goes down with the antibiotics. Or have it surgically removed. I chose to have it removed and he is scheduled for Wednesday.

    What would you guys have done? I'm definitely not a fan of unnecessary surgery, but I want it out. Whatever it is, it's not supposed to be there and I am totally uncomfortable just leaving it and hoping it goes away.

    Callie, I just wanted to thank you for all the detailed information! The fact that it moved very easily and was clearly not rooted - made me feel much better after reading your post. His diet is in good shape, he eats raw, supplemented with some Innova Puppy kibble and coconut oil. All his treats are grain free as well.

    And thank you ALL so very much for your kind thoughts and prayers. I'm really not good with this kind of stuff!

    Christine: I am a vet and have seen a lot of various lumps and bumps. I looked at the picture you posted. Here are a few possibilities, which your vet may have already mentioned:
    --it could be a plug or infection in his tear duct;
    --it could be a splinter or some other foreign material that punctured the skin and is making an infection;
    --he might have banged his face into something and broke a blood vessel (making a hematoma, or "blood blister");
    --it could be a swollen lymph node (indicating an irritation or infection in an area where that node is draining);
    --it could still be a tooth abscess, but possibly from a baby tooth (4th premolar) that got damaged when the adult tooth was coming in.
    The good news is that it is very UNlikely to be any sort of malignancy. The antibiotics seem like a very good plan to start with.

    Glad you are having it removed...Better safe than sorry....We'll be thinking of you and Slick on Wednesday!

    I'm sure you made the right decision for you and your dog.  If he's on the antibiotics and the lump starts getting smaller you can always cancel the surgery appointment.  I think it's hard to say one way or the other as 'we' are not there and it's not 'our' dog.  It's not like major surgery, and I'm sure all will be fine.  Be sure that the vet does a biopsy to find out what the 'lump' really is.   Sending positive thoughts to you and Slick.

    Thank you for citing all of the possibilities, Lucy. I appreciate your opinion very much. I hadn't thought of a damaged baby tooth, neither had my Vet. The fact that it did not aspirate at all is what leaves me the most confused. Slick stayed completely still during the procedure, so it wasn't compromised. Whatever it is, appears to be very solid - although she did suggest that sometimes (esp with an infection) the fluid can become extremely thick, preventing aspiration with a needle.

    Thanks very, very much for all of your support and well wishes. It helps more than you know to have an outlet and continuous supply of ideas and caring words! I'm sure he'll be fine, it's probably a piece of toy stuck in his face and we're going to have a good laugh about it! (crazy puppy!)

    Hi Christine,  just checking in on Slick, wondering if the bump went down a little with the antibiotics?  I hope so!  But then I know with Bubblgums lump, we kept looking at it and trying to decide,,,is it or isn't it going down???    But Bubblegums bump was what appeared to be blood when the vet took a sample. It took weeks before it went away completely!
    • Gold Top Dog
    The bump has NOT budged at all.  :) yes we're doing the same thing you did with Bubby!  "is it smaller yet??"   I must say, his breath HAS improved already - thank goodness.  I can't go very long without those puppy kisses and the "fish breath" was KILLING ME!!    Thanks for checking in!

    How is Slick doing??
    • Gold Top Dog
    Ah!  He's in surgery right now!  I asked for a biopsy (unless of course it's a toy).

    He's such a little freak.  He LOVES going there, despite the fact that every time he's been there, they've done horrible things to him..  He literally pulls me the last block to get there and as soon as we walk in, he RUNS to the back (where all the bad stuff happens).  He doesn't even look back, like to say "goodbye" to me :(

    Anyway, the lump has gone down in the past few days (by about 1/3?) and his breath is sweet again!    Fingers crossed that it's just a piece of wood or plastic and this will turn into one of  his "funny puppy stories".  Like when he ate the eyeballs off one his toys, which I discovered about 24 hours later when his poop was staring at me...
