Buck got a rash on his private area that by the time I noticed it was raw and weeping. My vet said he thought it was contact dermatitis. Buck had gotten into my flower bed just off the patio and laid in lantana. We think it was the lantana that caused the rash, it started itching and he started licking and it ended up looking almost like a hot spot, except for the rash part. Lantana makes me itche if I handle it.
Any I found it Tuesday night and got him to the vet first thing yesterday morning. He was given a steroid shot to control the itching, put on antibiotics for a couple of weeks and also I had to get some shampoo (shudder, shudder) that was $26. I had clipped all the fur from the inside of of his legs and a lot of his leg and tail feathers as the fur would stick. I have to wet the area down, apply the shampoo and wait 5 minutes and then rinse real well and dry real well. Have to do this once a day.
The rash part has already gone away and the raw part is looking much better already. Buck has NEVER been a licker. He likes to be close, loves to have your hand on him, his head in your lap, but never licked much. This morning I was sitting on the floor with him waiting for the 5 minutes to be up so I could rinse the soap off when he raised his head, looked me dead in the eyes and started licking my arm. I swear he was thanking me for making him feel better.
