NO too ear plucking?

All of the vets I have worked for advocate ear plucking.

The vet I work for never says there is anything wrong with plucking, he just like to use anouther methoud to clean the ears. I personly don't see anything wrong with it, other than it may be a little unconfortable for the dog. I've never owned a dog who has needed their ears plucked but I've seen many dogs who should have their ear hairs plucked/shaved.

So if not plucking, what should I be doing to clean my poodle mix's ears? Having endured plucking and waxing on my own body, I wouldn't want to subject my dog to plucking in such a sensitive region if it's not necessary. Do they not yelp in pain?

Not if you do it right...  If you pull the hair out in small clumps, it doesn't cause much pain at all.  Dogs are not supposed to have hair all the way down in the ear canal.  It's the non-shedding coat that causes it.  That coat keeps the moisture and nastiness deep inside the ear where it gets infected.  It hurts worse not to remove the hair than the actual process of removing it.

I think the reason people say that ear plucking causes ear infections is the same reason people accuse groomers of causing the dogs sores.  They've just simply uncovered a problem that has been there for a long time, but has been covered up by the hair.

Agreed. A puppy might yelp, but puppies yelp when you brush them, or when you trim their nails....

There is an ear plucking powder available- sprinkle some in - makes it easy to remove the hair - you only pluck small amounts at a time and if you go close to the root, it doesn't hurt - and it HAS to be done with some breeds of dogs - otherwise infections set in - and as others have said, the ear is full of wax, dirt, hair - and is very uncomfortable for the dog.

Ear hair that is ready to come out will pull out very easily.  If one pulls hair that is not actually in the ear canal but right on the edge it will be painful for the dog.  If the dog has an ear infection, or something else going on it could also hurt, hence the yelping.  Some dogs just don't like their ear hair pulled and will yelp, or scream, even if you get near their ears.

My dog hates getting her ear hair plucked so she never stays still long enough to get it done in one sitting. I end up having to do it in small doses on consecutive days. Any suggestions on how to get her used to ear hair plucking?

I would feed her treats before, after and during the plucking, it makes it more enjoyable.

Smear peanut butter or cream cheese on the fridge. Pluck while she licks. Plucking is associated with treats.

We have tried associating treats with touching her ears and we also tried giving treats everytime we plucked the hair,
but we never tried that before so we will try that tonight thanks.

I've never heard of that. My vet said to pluck the hairs out.

The hair that grows inside the ears are loose to begin with, which his why it doesn't hurt them too pull it out. It does hurt though, if you pull too much out at one time.

Okay I'm new, but as a groomer and a Scottish Terrier fancier I must say that many dogs ENJOY plucking. My scotties ( known for their horrid nasty tempers and their low tolerance of mucking about) get their "jackets" plucked. the entire areas from the top of their heads down their backs to the tips of their tails. Some places are less favourite than others but as I say some things are just little doggie necessities. Nail trimmings, de-matting, ear pulling, pad shaving, eye cleaning, and sanitaries are the worst things in the world if you ask some dogs and others just stand there "this too shall pass."
