    HELP!!

Hi All, does anyone know of a flea/tick shampoo or product that I can treat my 8 week old chi/dachshund puppy with.  The lady at the pet supply store in my area said that flea collars are not good for this breed of dog put didn't tell us what we could use instead.  I did by a flea/tick shampoo but silly me didn't read it before buying and it says on the back in small print "not to be used on dogs younger than 12 weeks".  I really want to protect chico from picking anything up being that he rolls around outside in the grass but from what I have learned is that certain things can not be used on this type of dog that would be allowed on other breeds.  Any advice would be much appreciated.

Most of the stuff sold over the counter shouldn't be used on ANY dog, and especially flea collars.  Talk to your vet about the proper dosage of Frontline to use.

According to their website, Frontline can be given at ages 8 weeks and up.

Does your puppy actually have fleas, or are you just wanting flea shampoo as a preventative? If it is fleas, you can bathe him in any dog shampoo- (i'd advise a puppy tearless shampoo). just leave it on for a while to suffocate and drown the fleas. Make sure you dry him thoroughly so he doesn't chill.

You can apply frontline about 3 days after the bath. (in my exprerience, I don't think it absorbs well if the oils have been recently stripped); or if you want to do frontline first, you can do that and wait 3 days before giving him a bath.

I agree with Glenda, stay far away from flea collars and dips. Both can be dangerous, and the flea collar can become toxic if it gets wet.

If you see fleas you can bath your pup with Dawn dish detergent, foam up the pup and let it stay on about 5 minutes..it is gentle enough to wash the pup but strong enough to kill the fleas

If your not seeing any fleas then I would hold off a little while longer for topicals if it was my pup

Thanks ladies,  The feed back was very helpful.  Chico doesn't actually have fleas but I just wanted to find out as a preventive measure.

    Thanks again for the help!![:D]

    DO NOT USE BIOSPOT!

I was an unknowing first time doggie owner trying to save some money and I bought Biospot since all the ads at the store showed that it did everything the others did and prevented mosquitos and cost MUCH less.  However, I read online about dogs having issues and disregarded them since some people commented it may have been a breed issue.  Well, Zoe, a mini dachshund, got sick a few days after giving it.  She puked and was peeing uncontrollably.  I called the vet and all I had to say was Biospot when she immediately said "it is toxic, bathe her immediately (it isn't waterproof as well as others), I don't know why they have that stuff on the market it is horrible" before I immediately gave her a bath.  Soon after, Zoe was fine and has been since.  I use Frontline Plus on her monthly in the warmer months.

I don't know if all pet stores sell this but we have a shampoo at work that works great for killing fleas. It's all natural and we even bath this one little dog that gets a bad allergic reaction to all flea products except this stuff. I think it's call Deflea or something not sure. I will find out tomorrow the name of it  and post the name of the stuff. It is expensive, but wow it works wonders. Good for puppies five weeks and up.

As one who has suffered through MANY flea investations, I've found that just about ANY gentle shampoo will do the job.  But, they key is leaving the pup lathered for at least 5 minutes.  Any fleas who aren't smothered are stunned enough that you can smush them with a fingernail....and you HAVE to hear the "pop" when you smush them.  And be sure to run plenty of hot water down the drain to get them OUT of the drains.

I've actually found that really good quality food makes the dogs far less appealing to fleas.  I feed Innova and also homecooked with a bit of garlic and haven't had a single flea for two years now.

If you want a safe flea preventative, Ark Natural's Neem Protect spray is excellent!
I use it on all of my chihuahuas.  It repels fleas, smells nice, is safe and non-toxic, non-chemical, etc.  You just spray it on every 5 days or so and reapply if it gets wet.  They also make a shampoo.  I hate putting toxic chemicals on my dogs- this works just as well and it's safe and all natural.   Um, and no, I don't work for them![:)]

Also please DO NOT use any HARTZ flea powder or flea stuff. It will kill your pup or can cause neurological problems.

Yep--stay away from biospot or hartz.

I used Hartz on Jetta once, and she had a severe allergic reaction. She had a hot spot the size of my fist on her back where I applied the flea drops, and it was fire engine red. She even cried it burned so much--poor pup.

I agree with the above posts--The best way to prevent fleas is a healthy diet, frequent bathing, and frontline.
