Hi everyone,
We are about at our wits end with this situation. We have 3 dogs, a 3-year-old black Lab and 2 Golden Retrievers. The only one of our dogs who has this problem is our Lab, who is our youngest dog. For about a year and a half now, he has been scratching and chewing himself nonstop. It has gotten to the point where if he doesn't wear a cone all the time, he will scratch all of the fur off his face and chew his legs and feet raw. We have been to the vet NUMEROUS times and have spent an absolute fortune trying to get a handle on this problem. He smells HORRIBLE. At first, we thought it was a yeast infection, but now we're not so sure. I don't really know how to describe the smell, but it's not pleasant. It's sort of a sour smell. There is also a ton of brown dirt looking material that comes off of his skin when he scratches. We have been bathing him about twice a week for the last several months. We've tried all kinds of medicated shampoos and tea tree oil shampoos with no results whatsoever and he gets that nasty smell back within just a day of having a bath.
We know it is not food allergies, because we have tried just about every grain-free, limited ingredient, and even raw diet under the sun, giving each new food at least 6-8 weeks to start working, but it never helps. He is still scratching and chewing himself constantly. Our vet did a skin scraping and no mites were seen, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't have them underneath his skin. He also has had his thyroid tested 3 times since this problem started and it always comes back perfectly normal. He was on prednisone for a long period of time last year, which obviously stopped the itching, but the side effects were too harsh and it was not treating the problem, only masking it. He also has been on Temaril P with the same results as the prednisone. Our vet also had us try Atopica for 3 weeks, which did absolutely nothing to help him. He also just finished a course of ketaconazole, which also didn't help. NOTHING is working.
Something that has me concerned that this is some sort of a mite/mange is that I have been breaking out in these itchy red bumps on the undersides of my forearms after picking him up or handling him in general. We did purchase some LimePlus dip, but we have only used it once and I know that you have to use it for several weeks to see any results, so we will keep doing that for a few more weeks.
Our vet just keeps insisting that it is most likely some sort of allergy, but I am having a very hard time believing that, especially after all the food trials we have done over the past year and a half with him with absolutely no results. We have tried many different protein sources, such as salmon, lamb, chicken, rabbit, and duck with no luck. He also has been getting organic coconut oil every day for the past 6 months. We have even tried putting organic apple cider vinegar in his drinking water, but no luck with that either. Like I said, we also have 2 Golden Retrievers and they have never had any problems like this and are perfectly healthy.
Does anyone have any suggestions at all? We have been to 2 different vets and both of them just blame allergies and we're getting extremely frustrated and are desperate for some help in getting our boy to feel better and get his fur back!
