    Calling Black Dog Owners!

[:)] I took Marley to the 'Puppy Spa' (a.k.a. my front driveway/hose) today, and I noticed that his tail has red highlights from the sun! I want my black lab to be black! Any remedies out there? Sunscreens? Something? Let me know! Thanks.

My mom's black great dane had this same problem all over his side.  We used that black magic shampoo and brushed him before and after.  Then we sprayed on some sunscreen with moisturizer on it and it was going in a few weeks.

My black lab has the same thing and last summer it seemed really bad.  My SIL saw us out for a walk and said "hey, did you get a new dog?"  I said "no, it's Sassy" and she said "wow, she looks like a cocoa lab".  We ended up finding out that Sassy was hypothyroid in Sept and put her on meds and her fur filled in and was jet black.  I thought we'd solved the problem, but now that spring has arrived, she's thinning again and looking more brownish/red.

I had a black rabbit for 8 years that did that every year.
The reddish brown never looked good on him. People thought that
    he was dirty or unkept.
By the early fall he would change back to being more black & by
    winter he was completely black.

I used to have a little black lab/cocker X that had reddish hairs on his back legs, but it only showed up in the sun.  I always figured it was because his mom was a small black lab and his dad was a red haired cocker.

I just figured it meant the dog is spending a lot of time in the sun, enough that he's been "sun bleached." It happens with horses, why not dogs? Jake is the blackest during the winter season but by the end of summer, he's turning a little brown.

I haven't noticed this on Jasmine.

So, I guess I just live with it...I was hoping there was someone who showed dogs out there that would have some sort of trick. I read it might be associated with nutrition, but I know I feed him high quality food, and I make all of his treats! Hmmm...

Lazlowe's coat just started to do this. My vet said it can also be age, and sun.

I have sucessfully used Ultra Black Shampoo from Biogroom (www.biogroom.com)

I have not used the Sun Shade Sunscreen from plush puppy, I have heard good things about it. http://www.plushpuppy.net/sunshade.html

Make sure that the red hairs are not just undercoat ready to come out.  Undercoat can die and become dull and gray or rusty.

Beyond that, have you changed his diet recently, or added anything to it?  Some dog foods are well known for adding a red tint to the coat.

Third thought, which is my problem with all my black dogs, is that they carry a partially expressed diltion gene which causes their side coat to fade a bit and look red or gray when they are geneticly black.

I'll look into the shampoo and sunscreen lazlowe1. Thanks for the sites.

icyhound...I don't think it's age, because he's 14 months. It could be he's going to shed them because he is blowing his coat right now. I feed Eagle Pack, raw veggies, raw meat, and homemade dog biscuits. Although, I haven't been giving him as many veggies as usual. That could be it.

I don't know about genetics...his mom is yellow and this is dad:http://home.socal.rr.com/esoneson/

I haven't noticed the reddish color on Cassidy, though she gets some white or a few brown hairs in the summer. Especially on her legs, and her back somewhat. I think it's partially her breed, though, since she's 1/2 GSD. I haven't used any special shampoo with her, and she gets more black in the winter!

Try adding a little paprika to his feed at each feeding. It may take a month or so to see the results, but that's what we use with our horses to keep their dark coats from showing signs of sun-bleaching. Good luck!

Try grape kool aid.  I have been told by many show people that is what they use to keep the black dogs black.

Anyone who has ever tried to clean up spilled kool aid knows it is a permanent stain and the grape color is certainly dark enough to pass as black.  You might want to try this on a small tester spot on the dog first.
