Hello friends,
Nala is a 2 1/2 year old St. Bernard/Brittany mix that my boyfriend and I rescued. The day we rescued her from the shelter about a year ago, she was covered in stripes of purple spray paint. I never really got to understand her background or story but we welcomed her with open arms, a big heart and a place she could call home sweet home.
A few months ago in August, Nala suddenly fell ill. It was wierd, the day prior she was running around the house sqeezing the life out of her squeaky chew toy and the following night she was hardly able to walk up the stairs without assistance. We rushed to the hospital not knowing what to expect. You don't simply adopt a dog in your family to neglect it when a big vet bill hits you and that's exactly what happened. Nala was diagnose with IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia) where her immune system is attacking her red blood cells and platelets. The vet forwarned us in advance that she didn't have a very good chance of making it because her hematocrit count was a mere 9% (Avg. is 35-45%) and that the initial treatment would cost about $4500. I had friends and family who told me to let her go and that it wasn't worth it to fork out so much money and that she wouldn't make it. We ignored them. You don't give up on family.
Nala was hospitalized for a week where she recieved 2 blood transfusion and her hematocrit would constantly fluctuate. It was a test against time to see if the medication would work. Finally, Nala was stable. We had shed tears of joy thinking the worst part is over. Unfortunately, on Monday December 1st 2014, Nala's platelet has dramatically declined and the vet started her on a new medication. Up to date, my boyfriend and I has spent over $6000 on treatment, hospitalization, weekly vet visit and labwork, and also medication. Please help Nala fight this vicious disease and keep our family whole
Wishing all a Happy Holiday!
