Prednisone help?

    Prednisone help?

We have a dog who is suspected of having ITP but also tested positive for Anaplasmosis which is a tick born disease that also causes low platelets. She is on 30mg of Prednisone going down to 20mg next week as her platelets have returned to normal. she is also on Doxycycline for the next few weeks for the Lyme. Although Prednisone is supposed to be an appetite stimulant but our dog is not eating very well and she just seems out of sorts and not herself. We have been in constant contact with our veterinarian and they say that the steroids can also cause her to be groggy and have an upset stomach. I have also read PetMD that red can cause behavior change. I was just looking for input from people who have had their dog on Prednisone and their experience with it. Thanks in advance! Pete

Prednisone can quickly cause a stomach ulcer -- my vet's own "recipe" for Slippery Elm Cocktail can be helpful -- it will actually help heal an ulcer.  If you will email me at callieatcritturs@yahoo.com I will share the recipe with you.

In addition. you may want to use milk thistle and perhaps SAM-e to help protect the liver and detox it.  Talk to your vet -- at the very least ask the vet for Denamarin (it's pricey -- milk thistle & SAM-e can be less pricey)

Prednisone is very common and my dog takes it regularly. She also takes denamarin to help support her liver, I get that at nutramaxdenamarintabs.com. I know prednisone is not good long term for the damage it can do to their organs so I only give my dog Prednsione as needed.
