@BeckahLynn
I have a 5 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. I rescued him at 4 weeks old from an abusive breeder. Hes an extremely good dog and VERY well taken care of! We've already been to the vet 2 times regarding this issue and NOTHING seems to work. He has been on antibiotics (he had bacteria in his urine). We went back 2 weeks later like instructed for another urine test and hes fine. BUT now this 'peeing' is happening WAY more frequent. Now i'm writing it like 'peeing' because my dogs urine when hes outside smells like a chemical warfare in my back yard. His urine is so STRONG smelling an this has absolutely NO color or smell. I've seen one other post on here about this, but the medicine helped that dog and its not helping mine. And we spent over 100$ for 10 days of medication. They want to neuter him but she honestly does not know if that will 'fix' the issue. (And i totally would feel horrible neutering my dog) BUT if its PROVEN to work then i would have no problem doing so AT ALL! I would take him tomorrow honestly. I'm just so broken and torn and i don't know what to do to help him. The second it happens he immediately gets this little guilty look on his face and licks himself like crazy. Hes NEVER went potty in the house since he was 2 months old.
BY THE WAY HE IS ON A COMPLETE GRAIN FREE DIET AND I AM SWITCHING HIM TO FROMM GRAIN FREE FOOD! (THEY PURCHASE ALL OF THEIR PRODUCTS LOCALLY IN THE USA. NO OUT SOURCED PRODUCTS ARE USED FROM OTHER COUNTRIES)
How much does he drink? Does he go straight to the water bowl after he pees?
Have you "caught" a sample lately? His urine may have been dark and stinky when there was infection, but it may not be now.
I totally understand what you're saying but -- think it thru logically -- if it is liquid coming from the urethral opening it's urine. And if he's drinking a ton of water that can make the urine look and smell like water. But if he's intact what that urine does after it's exposed to air may smell more potent.
I've never used Proin (for incontinence) but I use a vet who does TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine) -- herbs and acupuncture and my girl who "leaks" doesn't leak at all on the powder she's on (it's a prescription herb blend). But when I wipe her the urine looks and smells like water. BUT leave her alone all day and the cumulative smell would knock you off your feet.
It is not uncommon for some incontinence to follow a big bladder/kidney infection. That's how Luna's began.
However -- since he's intact, males can also easily get a big prostate infection which can be tough to diagnose and *that* could also lead to a discharge. I would talk to the vet about that specifically.
I know there is a mindset these days to leave a male intact. However -- and this is my own personal opinion -- given that we don't leave them to make their own decisions about how often and with what dog to mate, and we don't let them have that freedom -- I feel it is unfair to keep them intact. Because then they have the drive to mate ... and it is a very very strong drive. And yet we don't let them follow that instinct (or we shouldn't with the thousands and thousands of dogs gassed every year in shelters, etc.). So if we don't want them to complete the act upon their own will, then I feel it's unfair to keep them intact. At least after neutering that sex drive (after the testosterone gets out of their system) isn't present. I hope that makes sense. I'm not trying to be snarky -- I've just always felt that since we humans control whether or not they can mate that it's unfair to keep them intact and yet not allow them to act on it. That's one of my strong reasons for neutering a male and spaying a female. It's not about love, and it's not about pleasure with a dog -- it's about instinct - so if the vet feels neutering is appropriate I wouldn't feel the slightest bit bad. I understand your feeling, but it could be a contributor to this.
